Engineering viable at all?
I usually like "summon" type builds, but I have never had a successful engineering build despite trying over and over and over. The damage is always too little, and too indirect until you just get chased down by enraged eggs (or whatever those enemies are that gain speed over time). Am I just doing something terribly wrong or is it not great?

Forget any stat besides engineering that doesn't help your survival. Health, Armour, Regen and Engineering with a smidge of speed are all you need. If you can find turrets or mines as items that is amazing. Take them all. Aim for an okay speed because killing the bosses can be hard so you will need to dodge a lot. If you find bounce your golden. Penetration is good too. Don't bother with sausage or snake. Explosion size/damage is good if you get up to red wrench's or find missile turrets

The guy that gets 12 weapons is godly with engineering.

TBH I don't find engineering to be particularly good right now. Finding enough turrets/wrenches to feeling satisfying is difficult and getting good spawn RNG can be the deciding factor a lot of the time. Engineer who spawns all their turrets in one area suffers from the opposite problem, they can't move away from their turrets or they get trapped and die (this limits the area they have to dodge). The upside of engineering is that you could go negative in all your offensive states since none of them (except engineering) effect turrets. It's also fairly difficult to know when to combine wrenches for maximum effect because you can't downgrade.

Grabbing incidental engineering (duct tape and etc.) feels great though. Usually I'll take a blue turret so the extra AoE early and it helps smooth out the early game and let you take greedy items (harvesting, luck) more aggressively. If you do decide to go full engineering, just be careful of the mummies on wave 11, you'll need to use your wrenches to knock them back into the turrets or they'll gain speed and probably kill you (take boxing glove).
