question on shuriken mechanics

i have been experimenting with using shurikens and I have some questions.
1) do shurikens gain the effect from the ricochet upgrade? I know that technically they are a melee weapon, but they make a projectile, and ricochet states "your projectiles gain 1 bounce" so it should like it should work.
2) do shurikens benefit from the upgrade that allows projectiles to penetrate 1 additional enemy? again, it is a melee wepon, but it makes a projectile, so I am curious if it works.

Just because it has melee scaling does not make it a melee weapon.

Yeah treat shuriken as a projectile that scales with melee damage.
