I haven't attempted pacifist on D5 myself yet, but I found bull to be one of the easier ones. I pretty much did what you did, then I would run around and regen if I got low, then go back in, take a hit and explode some mobs. Everything with an explosion tag also benefits him, so pick them up. Stay away from elites and bosses, you won't be killing them. If you find the harvesting item that damages you every second, the run becomes infinitely easier.
For Bull same thing, but swap dodge for as much armor as you can get.
Didn't even think about that item until you mentioned it, great advice I will be looking out for it.
I doubt it does, as it's not an attack, but you can try it and see what happens. I doubt you'd want life steal anyway, as the explosion doesn't happen often enough for life steal to be any effective.
I tried hands a bunch. I found their extra knock back got me killed regularly, pushing mobs (especially mummies) in front of me and leaving me no clear path.
I tried tasers a bunch too, since they slow instead of knocking back, and they give some harvesting to get ramping up. They've worked well for me on the D5 lumberjack, and on D5 pacifist before this patch. But I was failing enough times with tasers today that I tried something else. I do want to try them again, since I think they're viable.
I ended up winning with 6 level 1 shields and going super tanky: armor, dodge, health regen. The extra defensive stats from the set of shields helped. Even with lots of armor the shields weren't killing anything, but that was OK. I ended up taking a few things that gave me other stats and lost about half of the knock back, and I think the reduced KB actually helped.
For all of my runs, early harvesting was good, and a little speed and life steal helped too. Trees are great, but I thought trees might also mean luck and healing from consumables would be good. But with only the trees dropping food, luck and food from health ended up not being that good. Health regen and life steal ended up being more reliable.
Basically, be fast enough to stay ahead, avoid massive knock back, and have enough damage reduction and health regen + life steal to stay topped off.
I've beat D5 with him once or twice without the blood bag (maybe not this patch though?) Without it, try to get your explosions by hitting mobs that don't hurt that much, and splashing those that hurt more (or just letting them live).
If you get the blood bag, you should be golden. Blowing up every second even when you don't get hit makes things a lot easier.
Armor helps, since you're going to be taking hits. Interestingly, dodge helps too, to give you time to regen health. That's especially true with the blood bag, since you don't really want to get hit at all. Trees are also still good.
As with most characters, econ is important. Early harvesting is strong. Aliens give you more damage and more money, and crowds are easier for bull to deal with than most, especially if he gets + explosion size. Luck is pretty useful on him for extra food, more chest from trees, and getting a few of the rare drops.
I'm pretty sure life steal does nothing. I found I didn't need to stack much extra damage or %damage, other than the ones specifically for explosions. Crit seems like overkill in many cases.
Second try after seeing this thread, I dont like replaying D5's that I have done but heres one. Just stack regen at first and try to get some harvesting. Having stats gives you higher chances to get similar statted items. Also get negative movement speed so you get couch at the end. You need harvesting so you get the item that does 1 damage to you every second. You dont need damage at start, after youre considerably tanky you will get damage. I had 120 (10 a second) regen before couch and couch gave me 80 more. At the end I was a little over 20 hp a second regen.
