is it just me or buying purple items is never a good idea ?
Considering the INSANE cost of purple items, and also their massive downsides, it always feel to me like a waste of money to buy any.

I mean sure, i'm not dumb, i get it, the "win-something-lose-something" aspect is important in this kind of games. But seriously, why should i spent 400 bucks on an item that can debuff very important stats, such as health or armor, when i can just keep looting and accumulating basic items which are usually waaaay cheaper and can get me the same result (with less punitive downsides) after getting 2 or 3 of the same kind ?

I don't know, it never feels like a good idea to buy purple items, no matter what build I use. Same goes for orange items (although some are great like the orange sweater, if you play a melee build).

Melee - might be. Ranged no, ranged is fine.

getting 2-3 of the same kind on higher difficulty is not the same with the inflation tho

Purple items definitely help with specific builds and situations. Obviously if you're just letting a specific stat tank into the ground (or your character already has it irreparably messed up), some purple items become incredible. For example, Glass Cannon on the ghost character is a no-brainer. You just basically get +25% damage for a downside that you can't effectively fix anyway.

Those items are for use on a different character/build where the downside stat is useless like melee damage on a ranger or gun build or vice versa.

I feel so far downsides for a majority of items are worth it. There are a few red and purple items that the downsides seem obviously questionable, but that is far and few in between.

Handcuffs being the most situational of all of them. It feels like getting it anytime before wave 18 feels odd. and if you aren't taking advantage of the other 2 damage types, you are paying a hefty material cost for 8 damage in your specialized damage. It definitely isn't worth it for melee where 8 damage can come by at a lot less without the HP cap penalty. But if you are going range and elemental, 8 damage is essentially two red upgrades. (or was it 6?) Still, I would rather buy damage specific items than handcuffs.

Blood Bag is interesting, the -1HP isn't as bad as I made it out to be, however, Blood Bag is a bit expensive material wise. It has to earn back its own cost and then more for it to actually be worth it. I haven't done the math, but I sometimes wonder if it is worth it to buy, even in earlier waves.

Ugh all engineering item penalties should just be removed, and all other items with engineering penalties should just be removed.

The Bloodbag is awesome with the exploding dude and in the current patch when you got enouth regeneration. The problem begins in the next patch where the regeneration mechanic changes.
