Can it play from discs in the CD Drive?
Title says it all. Can this emulator run my library of official copies from my CD drive?

Dolphin supports all commercial games for GameCube and Wii. These can be dumped to an SD card legally from a Wii or Wii U using a homebrew application called CleanRip, and you can also dump digital Wii games using an app called Yet Another BlueDump MOD. I'd recommend visiting this website for more detailed information on that.
https://wii.guide/

There's also GameCube and Wii homebrew games which can be downloaded from the Internet and played right from Dolphin, though some Wii ones have trouble booting without installing an application called the Homebrew Channel.

Using Dolphin just requires you to have the dumped game on your device in a folder it can read from and setting up your controller, though some games require certain settings to work properly or run smoothly. There's a lot of extra features that Dolphin is capable of, such as 5K resolution, save states, native GameCube/Wii controller support, loading mods and texture packs, and more.

Regular drives are unable to read Gamecube & Wii games, games must be dumped.

You must dump them to use them, or find ISOs thru other means.

Then how do people get them in the first place?

Hacked Wii/Wii U or using some obscure ass drive that could read them. https://dolphin-emu.org/docs/guides/ripping-games/

I used the letterbomb method to homebrew my physical Wii, and I get my ISOs off my physical copies from there using a homebrew app that is designed to extract ISOs. Letterbomb is pretty easy to set up assuming you follow a tutorial but you do need an original Wii to do it as far as I know, not sure if it works on WiiU.

Cheapest and easiest way (and the way I used way back when) was to enable homebrew on an old Wii and use the CleanRip homebrew utility.

Which format are GC discs?

Dolphin used to have the ability to read off of a DVD backup but it was removed a few months ago, due to how DVD backups themselves are obsolete and were a nightmare to use in general, since they're much slower than hard drive and lead to constant stuttering and hangs. But even then it didn't support loading off the original GCN/Wii discs.

Some specific DVD drives were able to read the discs through minimal tweaking.

Not *all** Wii games https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Wii
But all commercial GameCube games at least boot.

There are no legal ways to obtain ROMs besides dumping them yourself

I know. The question was asking how to do so. And others above have already answered that.

you cant. You'll have to call up a friend who has a Wii to let you use their system to dump your own discs that you buy.
