You can only mine the leafs if you have nothing in your hand. To mine other blocks, craft a hammer.

And how do you craft the hammer if you can't get anything? I don't see any recipe in my crafting section

I just found the answer to my own question, if others are in the same boat as I, you need 1 stick (by gathering from tree leaf) a stone (by digging dirt with the stick) and hypersilk (by killing one of the 4D Spider)
