Hopefully it's open world, kinda want something like The Godfather
Godfather was pretty good years ago, would so love to see it return, but as for Mafia hopefully they do something similar, along with open world etc

It'll likely be linear than with the three Mafia games, unfortunately. I could be wrong, but I don't really have high hopes. I would've at least liked Mafia 4 with actual, open world like with GTA, and be set around 1989 or 1990. Instead, we're getting a prequel that's unlikely going to have any and all open world environment (again, I could be wrong, but the game itself just doesn't have much hype to it).

Hopefully you're wrong I mean generally its not hard basically re-do The Godfather, add more content, own your own family, recruit members do your thang (obviously once you climbed the ranks), take over rackets, set them up and upgrade them, take over the map and once everythings taken over setup an event where a new family tries to come in and takeover or what not... would be great if WB released the nemesis system, you beat some dude in the streets he comes back with a group and tries to ruin your stuff..... like heeps of stuff that could be done.

I can only hope so. Of course, 2K has been out of touch with their own community, and the first three Mafia games are good and all, but the lack of true open world shows that the devs have been dropping the ball lately. I played Mafia 2 back then and as great as the game itself is, it just feels way too linear than open world, and even if it can be done as open world, there's not a lot to do outside of any of the missions, same with Mafia 3.

i'm lowkey embarrassed by how long i was bringing in vehicles to the north dump and the south docks before it registered to me how limited the "open world" was.

Same. I was absolutely disappointed with 2K's lazy direction in making their Mafia series more linear than open world. I also thought Mafia 2 would be open world, but I'm shocked to see that there's almost nothing to do outside of these missions besides buying clothes and crushing cars for cash, that's really much it. Even Scarface: The World Is Yours, a game from 2006, was fully explorable and had large number of activities to do (though you can only kill people if you're playing as other characters as Tony himself will not resort to killing people), whereas Mafia and its sequels fall drastically short. And I'm concerned that the prequel's likely going to follow suit with its linearity.

as much as i appreciate the ai/programming of the "shadow of" nemesis system, i think i'd rather have an approximation of it done within the framework of something like "red dead online", if that makes any sense.
it's unlikely they'll shift focus off the narrative aspect, since it's kinda expected at this point, by adding in a system like that into the main story mode.
free ride from 1:classic, if it would've continued and evolved, would've been something like that. which makes me feel like that's where something like this would most likely appear.

so it'd be like saints row 1's co-op (which were already like free ride missions) and multiplayer "gang simulator" modes rolled into one with an added "rivals" system.
i think if they tried to replicate the nemesis system with npcs in the main story mode, we'll end up disappointed.
edit: in retrospect, it's unfortunate that both series ditched these modes after 1.
