And yes cars were all but unheard of in Sicily during the 1900's, they didn't become "common" until the 1910s and even then, they were for the well-off people.
My theory is, that I think the game will run from 1900-45, so we'll probably see them get slowly into the game as the years goes on. True about cars - my grand-grand father was a mayor close to the border of Germany - and when WW1 broke out, he was on holiday, quite a distance away. And was collected in car, to get as fast as possible back to his mayor town - and it was in 1914 quite a sensation so see a car, I'm told from his memories he wrote in a book. So it was not even given that you owed a car if you were a mayor back then - but a Godfather would own one of course ;)
and fast travel will probably by train...if they have such option. Don't think any Mafia game had that option, come to think of it.
45 years is a bit of an unrealistic guess, but I do think the game will span multiple decades. According to leaks, it's following the stories of Salieri, Morello, and Peppone, so it'll likely end some time before Mafia 1 starts in 1930.
If I had to guess, I'd say it'll start some time around 1904, and run through the early 1920s, when Peppone was murdered.
Good bet 👍 on the timeline - haven't played M1 since it came out first. And M2 the same, so many details i don't remember.
Plan is to play Mafia Definitive Edition, as a warmup for M4. 😁
Horse carriage and train - in the first part of the game
that was about the patent. it took teddy roosevelt getting into office for that to be overturned in court so all the americans who were building their own cars could actually finally sell. he also introduced the anti-monopoly and the law that makes it illegal to lie about your product, which was technically legal beforehand.
i mentioned it elsewhere here, but during the specific decade the game is set, automobiles were swarming the island from the mainland for the annual targa florio series of races. italians' romance with automobiles goes back to the late 1800s.
If you read Puzzo's "Godfather" and "Sicilian" you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Red Dead Redemption 2 are taking place in 1899 - not a whole lotta wagoneering about - trains and horses - probably only for the first part of the game.

"america's first automobile race".
the reason only enthusiasts and hobbyists who ordered do-it-yourself kits had them early on was because of this cartel:

alam, along with the guy who was awarded the u.s. patent in 1895:

created a racket where they controlled who could sell cars. essentially creating a national stranglehold on the automotive industry until teddy roosevelt started cleaning house around the turn of the century. it's specific to america.
italy, who had multiple major automobile, motorcycle, and voiturette racing events going back to 1900, didn't have that issue. one race, the coppa florio:

expanded out to sicily in 1906 for the annual targa florio:

It's funny because it's literally owned by the same publisher, but they will never want Mafia to really thrive, it will always be a niche franchise.
