Any info on the engine?
Will they use Fusion Engine from M3 and M1DE again, or go with UE5?

unreal engine 5

By look of the pictures given by the steam page. I can pretty sure to assume it's the same engine used by Mafia III and Mafia Definite edition (And every other mafia game) even more upgraded ofc.

My honest opinion is that Illusion Engine is still the best engine for mafia games. Specially if take a look at Mafia Definite edition and how well the engine works there. I think we have nothing to worry about.

Unreal Engine 5 is not magic word that fixes everything. You can still make ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with Unreal. And actually you are even more at risk to give everything the classic "unreal look" (More like fortnite copy pasta look). Thou if done correctly it can look awesome.

But that said the Illusion Engine is more than capable these days to be used to tell good mafia story.

I was actually hoping they'd use Fusion/Illusion Engine. I will be happy if it's true.

If you take a look at the pictures i'm pretty sure you can also spot the trademark looks of it. Most obvious give away picture is the marble corridor shot. If you take a look example the object sizes/angles/lights/textures (engine geometry seems to be the same) etc and compare them to previous mafia games (III/definite) you can quite easily come to conclusion.

This is very interesting if its true and they have managed to keep the look similar to Illusion engine. Thou its possible to port assets etc. But My analysis leans more towards illusion engine being used. Also would like to point out that the linked website doesn't have any source that confirms the acclamation. That said it can purely be website authors speculation.

I'd be not suprised if that is the fact as these days any game coming out someone will shout at some point it must/will be at unreal engine even that could be further from the truth.

Another thing is that we need to take also look how many games in history and upcoming. That are published by 2K and rockstars are made with unreal engine?

2K has multiple inhouse engines that are as good as or even better than unreal that they can use. This includes Rage engine from GTA-series. That would be more no brainer to implement over Unreal. Also you have to remember unreal engine takes licensing fees which with inhouse are non.

I'm still 100% sure its Illusion and not Unreal and the website is only speculating without solid proof.

There is no official announcement nor any developer party member has said anything regarding the use of unreal engine 5. And yes i know this controversial talk but there is still no solid proof of this.

any news?

I was so dissapointed after Mafia Definitive Edition, I believe that engine doesn't matter and don't expect anything good from hangar 13 :(
Mastergaming Aug 21, 2024 @ 10:38am
Wonder why every developer has been using unreal engine a lot lately
Claude_Lib Aug 21, 2024 @ 10:38am
Matter of taste. I personally really like Mafia 3 and I love Mafia Definitive Edition and I really hoped Hangar 13 would continue using their own engine.

Mostly because building and rebuilding an in-house engine is a lot of work that it can create a lot of issues for the actual games development. That is actually what happened with Mafia II and III. With II they kind of had to build a whole engine mostly from scratch so they couldn't prototype or experiment enough. With Mafia III they took parts of Mafia II and rebuilt it but they ran into issues with translation cause some of the stuff was written in Czech. A lot of devs compare it to trying to drive a train while the railway is being constructed.

Yes this is true if the existing engine is basically too old to upgrade and or is mainly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. That said i think they have pretty much done the core heavy lifting with the latest title Definitive edition and how much better it ran against Mafia III's bugs etc.

That said. Sure unreal engine can be good clean slate but if you follow discussion that is going on over unreal engine. The solution as if lets just to switch to unreal isn't that simple. The experience and customization varies quite much what type of game you are going to make. Sure Unreal excels at the moment easily for 3rd person fps etc type of titles (no wonder due to fortnite being Epic main focus) But multiple other titles/games need to still code/make their own modification to the code even closer to hardware level to optimize it and make it work. Meaning unreal engine itself still isn't some magic trick that will make everything work and glorious by just dumping it over everything.

Unreal engine in that extend is very heavy engine depending the size of you project/game and can be as task consuming to work with as any other engine.

This doesn't take to an account the thing that if you have already team and people that has been working with your in-house engine and knows its caveats and tricks how to make it work upgrade it to work best possible way.

Over making your team learn new engine sometimes from ground up and or recruiting new people who have not previously probably ever worked with game title you are making but know the engine somewhat. Meaning the is always learning curve switching engine too even if you start with clean slate.

There is reason why unreal asset flip meme exists
