Boss mechanics?
Just started game, was fighting a fire boss with a bunch of books in the room. Was going ok until suddenly all the turn order changed to him and he took 5 turns in a row (was still all him) and aoe'd my entire party over and over until they were dead. I don't see any special mention anywhere of boss mechanics or what caused this to suddenly happen.

Is there hidden boss mechanics or something?

He can do things the grunts can't. That's why he's the boss.

Yes, there are gimmicks that might cost you runs to learn about.

As for the librarian... let's just say he gets mad once he has nothing to read.

Or burn. Save the books and focus him down quick. I lost many brave souls to that...thing.

The librarian fight starts with 3 stacks of books. Each turn librarian takes 3 turns and uses one of them to deal damage to a book stack.

Whenever a book stack is killed/destroyed he will move forward and use a aoe attack that hits all your heroes and burns them. Then he will keep this cycle until there is no book stacks left and he's in the first position.

This is the most dangerous part of the fight, he will use the aoe attack on all 3 of his actions which will devestate your party in just a couple of rounds.

You must kill him before he destroys all books and starts spamming the aoe attack. DoTs and dodge removing/ignoring attacks are useful against him.

Way to spill out everything unsolicited. Where's the fun in that? :P

I killed him with this setup (spot 4 to 1): with Pestdoctor (2nd class spec unlock; most Dots get through), Wizard (ritualist), Vestal (2nd class spec unlock; you get your buff when attacked) Leper (Stormwind).

Pestdoctor dots him to death while the Leper bursts.
Vestal keeps her buff damage attack where you can buff a second charecter next to you. Her sigil is all the time on the first character spot. Wizard can curse (so leper ignores blind self debuff) or dagger the boss, or heal.

This is not a hidden boss mechanic, this is how turn order works and it is documented in game. Every round of combat there is a roll for inititiave for each participant which is then added to their speed value, the combatant with the highest number acts first, etc. Btw this boss acts 3 times a round, although he does have a free action but that can be used only once and it's not an attack.
