Who knows, it's likely because it's easier to animate in lots of situations since there's no longer unique sprites and just a single model, but this change alone pretty much completely wrecks the modding scene.
This is the first time I heard the new graphics look worse. I think they are amazing. They made the characters have more realistic proportions, with more interesting animations, while still keeping that 1-frame attack comic book feel.
This aesthetic is definitely NOT, easier to animate. Devs said this is one of the reasons they couldn't create as many monsters/heroes as they may have wanted. Ended up taking longer to produce.
Making it harder for mods is really the only bad thing about this.
So then this switch was for nothing since it compromised the unique aesthetics, modability, and their own vision.
I think they landed perfectly here.
Wish the same could be said for the game as a whole, though.
The game looks way better in the second part...
The 3D cell shades really look way better and i can barely tell the difference between the 2D sprite and 3D one in the turn based battles when idle the fighting scenes in DD2 also look way better , it's minimalistic while preserving the art style.
