He has a base 40 hp with 2 speed, by the time you get your block tokens up the enemies already have hit you with ful damage and if they're ordained you're already at 10 hp. He definitely does need a hp buff.
He's a decent tank, damage dealer, and support. Smite hits hard, Zealous Accusation is a DoT AoE that burns blocks and dodges, Bulwark of Faith is a block + taunt + regen without a charge limit, and he also has a double heal as well as a double stress heal.
He's not particularly amazing in any role, but he doesn't need to be. Versatility is a virtue.
I've also tried running Banneret in the back, and it's surprisingly effective. Tenacity giving everyone a block token makes you into a really effective support character.
As said, the last thing CRU needs right now is a health buff.
The highest are FLA: special hero, tailed by mini-boss + unique costs -- and BH: special hero, limited recruitment.
LEP: 44 HP, 2 SPD
MAA: 42 HP, 2 SPD
VES: 41 HP, 2 SPD
CRU: 40 HP, 2 SPD
CRU has every single role wrapped into a single slot - taunting, guarding (regen), healing, soothing, support, and potent self-sustain that beats MAA combo-crush + competes with LEP. Unlike MAA - CRU can heal others, and unlike VES - CRU can taunt and soothe himself (etc), so 1-4 HP is the price you pay for everything - including solid damage and DoT builds.
CRU is in a very good place right now - neither too weak nor too powerful, with clearly marked pros, cons, and a mere 1-4 HP disparity in return for being the ultimate generalist.
That's precisely how I've used him the most (so far).
Thanks to the DLC 'honeymoon' phase of wanting to pair CRU+DUE together, I've used Banneret CRU as a pseudo 'flaming Alchemist' to make up for DUE having such limited R4 potential, and when he's not turning the back line into a pile of ash, he's prepping the team with heals and soothes, or shoving into R2 for a few smites to seal the deal.
