When does the game save?

I'm aware the game saves on exit, but after "just-placing-some-trinkets / Purchasing-inn-stuff" and upgrading skills before exiting, It is all undone when I reenter the game.
It's the third time it has happened and it's really annoying; both out in the field as well as at the Inn.

Is there a way to force a save or is there a rule of thumb for how much further I need to go before it saves my recent changes?

Yeah, afaik the game itself doesn´t save in that situations which can be annoying, but you can also use for your advantage sometimes, if let´s say you missed to see something you really wanted to buy at the Hoarder but alrready spent the money, or you messed at upgrading the wrong skills at the Inn, or you forgot to get rid of some bad quirk at the Hospital. You can always exit and restart the thing.
