It's basically a very badly placed 'quit run' button that makes it seem, due to its location, that it's a tab with similar gameplay weight to the ones it is surrounded by.
Hit it when you feel like it's not worth trying to push through with whatever setup you have.
You'll probably lose all your memories though, can't confirm because I've never done it myself, but I think it's a safe assumption.
This is the real answer, do not get trolled OP
Abandoning a run in the wild means your characters die.
It's relatively logical, it's just that the options have not been given names that reflect what happens, which for players is uniformative.
When characters abandon the mission at the inn, they survive, thus they are available for the next attempt.
If you abandon in the wild, they are assumed to have died, hence there are replacements at the Crossroads.
I read somewhere else that you used to lose memories even if you abandoned at the inn, but they changed it during the Early Access period. Which is probably why the message and the options-labeling, don't really make it clear that there is a distinction between "abandon at inn" and "abandon on the road".
