Split Item Stack?

Hey! Just starting the game and I can't figure out how to split item stacks, like when I want to share the same combat item between multiple characters. Shift click and ctrl click don't seem to do anything - has anyone else figured this out?

Weirdly you need to hold X and drag to split stacks
