How the hell do you remove the negative effects. I probably missed a tutorial somewhere but they’re making it impossible to actually get anywhere.

Find a sink, you should have the option to splash water on your face.

(not a) birdbath and a surprisingly clean tub are also good

If you've unlocked the church then you can just dunk your face in some holy water.

If the effect is something more like a curse, then you can just use the uncursing machine on yourself instead.

There's also a handful of soapy water item, that works too.
