Do you have to play West of Loathing prior to playing this?
Is there anything I would miss if I don't play the first game? Or is this a game that you can hop straight into without having any prior experience with its predecessor?

From what ive played so far i dont think you need to play west of loathing but there are some gags and references to the first game

In which case would you, and any others, think that it'd be best to play the first game too to get the whole experience? I'm really interested and would love to get behind it, but I don't want to miss out on anything!

No I don't think any knowledge is necessary. If you've played Kingdom of Loathing there's lots of references to that but the game stands on its own.

from what I have seen so far there isn't any major reference to west of loathing
but I do suggest you still play it because it's a pretty good game and it also kinda teach you the basic of combat a lot better than this one

I see, thank you all for your responses! And is the basics of combat not beginner friendly in this game?

as someone who played west of loathing i'm not the best to comment, but i do think the combat is pretty simple; i would also definitely recommend playing west of loathing though! like people said, there are references to it, and plus it's a really fun game with some decent replayability that i personally have played through a few times

I would heavily suggest getting West of Loathing and it's Dlc! Even if you don't play it before Shadows, it is such a fun time!

If you're still stuck, speak to the librarian.

You would miss out on a great game... But no, it's not necessary to play WoL to play SOL.

I wouldn’t say you have to but it will be a really good introduction to the mechanics and let you enjoy references and jokes
Yes. You have to.
If you don't you'll wake up tomorrow bound, gagged and with a sack over your head.
This developer takes his work *very* seriously.

West of Loathing helps with the whole ecosystem of the game. I noticed a LOT more Kingdom of Loathing references in this one, though.
