Shadows Over Loathing
What would you name the magic and melee classes?
I've seen a lot of people say that Jazz agents are the only class that really feel fitting for the setting of the game, whereas Cheese Wizard (a play on Cheez Whiz, which was invented in the 50s) and Pig Skinner (named after the word 'pigskin', a slang term for a football whose usage peaked at about the time the game is set) are less so. So what would you name these classes instead?

I was thinking that the magic class could be something jell-o related because of those absurd vintage savoury jell-o recipes (though these were in the 50s as well.) Perhaps a Jell-Occultist? Finger foods saw a surge of popularity in the prohibition era due to the rise of cocktail parties hosted in homes, so an Hors Diviner would also be appropriate.
An alternative approach would be to lean into the Lovecraftian horror elements instead, and opt for a Calamari Clairvoyant.

The melee class would be the trickiest to name, since they're typically named after animals. Though it's true that 'Pig Skinner' doesn't really scream 'Prohibition', I also can't think of anything that would.
If we again try to lean into the horror elements of the game, we could have a Tentacle Carver, or a Shoggoth Slasher.

EDIT: And here's another thought, what about the secondary skills? Psychogeologist, cryptobotanist, and Insectologist? I didn't have any problem with the themeing of these, but the fact that they all play pretty much identically is quite boring.

I think pig skinner was just fine for an era that had just started getting into sporting for the commoner if they'd made a little more effort to bring that to players' attention, yes. Cheese wizard just needed to bring up how curdling these Lovecraftian events were.

But what I might have picked if people wanted to feel the classes were more intrinsic to setting... the Prohib-hitter, a Muscular class with a variety of mixers whose names evoke drinks but they're also puns for mixed martial arts (this would also cause some confusion whenever people want to talk about the Prohies) and the Mixologist, who is totally talking about non-alcoholic beverages here, don't mind the definite alcoholic smell of his liquid enhancements or his heavily heat based attacks. This makes all the classes lean a little heavily on the speakeasy scene, but since you own one...

Ooh, interesting. Jazz agents actually weren't too reliant on the speakeasy idea, so i think it works well enough. I do like the name 'Prohib-hitter' a lot.
Jazz agent - fine as it is
cheese wizard - Medicine distiller (prohibition era "medicinal whisky")
Pig skinner - Fish Gutter (because Deep ones)

You know I was rewatching Beverly Hillbillies not too long ago the whole "rheumatism medicine" trope they go on about might have some real potential.
