for anyone wondering you trap the demon in the middle house with the rift also in it and with the rock in the way he goes through the rift and gets trapped

Ok, for everyone having trouble, this is how it worked for me: In the real world, have the rock closed across the entrance. In the ghost world, have the arms of the two orbs pointing down, so that the middle house is visible and the portal is inside. Chase the Midnight Man into the house, follow him in, and he'll run through the portal. You can then exit and move the portal and house to the left, so that you can exit the ghost realm. Push the rock aside, and you can deal with the Midnight Man.

I believe that once he runs through the portal, you can just go in after him.

No, this specifically does not work, even though it'd make sense, and even though it is what the wiki recommends.
