Trial is available but can't even install it. I'm stuck in a loop between two screens and nothing installs.

No, I already have installed MW3. But to enable the trial multiplayer you have to go in to the game and install the multiplayer package. That's where the issue is. Clicking in the install button gets you nowhere. But found a solution on Reddit.
