Liberty Falls, bug or just something i don't understand.

Tells me to drop the canister near the trap, i do that. Game tells me to pick it up again, I kill the HVT with the canister on the ground, nothing, i kill it with the canister on me, nothing. I'm missing something or was it just bugged ?

you're supposed to turn on the trap and kill it in the trap,
while the canister is in the trap radius.

You need to kill the HVT inside the dark aether trap while it's active, with the canister on the ground next to that same trap circle.

Do they need to be exactly on the trap or just near it ?

Just have the canister within the same purple trap field that you kill the HVT. Have the HVT in that same part of the trap. Took me a while to figure out what was needed too, but I''ve never had one fail since doing that and I've run the quest multiple times.
