elimination kill difference?

Does anyone know the difference between kill and elimination?

kill = you kill the enemy

Elimination = You kill or you assist killing the enemy

Think of eliminations as kills and assist being combined into a single thing

Elims are when you either kill the player yourself or do damage to the player that doesn't fully heal before someone else kills that player.

I thought:
eliminations = who does the most damage
kills = who fires the last bullet
but even when the last bullet is mine I don't get the kill

Eliminations are there to pad the K/D and "help" rookie/unskilled players feel better about their performance.
