Activision name rules
Name rules are 2 - 16 characters, with no special characters. Unicode characters are accepted.

However they do have

"Depending on which Product and platform or Device you are using, your username on the platform may be your username in the Activision account. Additionally, some Activision accounts may allow users to form different "clans", "squads", "teams", or other groups (collectively "groups") with unique group names. When you choose a username or a group name, or otherwise create a label that can be seen by other users, you must abide by the following guidelines as well as the rules of common decency. If Activision finds such a name to be offensive or improper, it may, in its sole and absolute discretion, change or remove the name, and/or suspend or terminate your use of the service and, if you are a resident outside North America, apply additional consequences set out in Section 14(B)(ii). In particular, you may not use any name:

ethnically or otherwise objectionable;

iii. Belonging to any religious figure or deity;

iv. Related to drugs, sex, alcohol, or criminal activity;

v. That is subject to the rights of any other person or entity without written authorization from that person or entity;

vi. That belongs or refers to a popular culture figure, celebrity, media personality, icon or persona;

vii. That is, contains, or is substantially similar to a trademark or service mark, whether registered or not.

You may not use a misspelling or an alternative spelling to circumvent the name restrictions listed above, nor can you have a "first" and "last" name that, when combined, violate the above name restrictions.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, you are responsible for all use of your account. You must notify Activision immediately of any unauthorized use of your username, password, account information, or any other breach of security that you become aware of relating to your Account. Such notification should be made via the Customer Support web page at www.support.activision.com
"

https://www.activision.com/legal/terms-of-use

you can contact Activision about it provide screenshot of email, message to them. Then wait for their reply. You will have to repeat your self sometimes.

You can either wait for their response which you may have to repeat your self or change the name. You get a token each six months to change your name. If you do not have a token you can ask them for one to change the name.

If you do not change your name you could get a ban.

Read the security enforcement policy.
https://support.activision.com/articles/call-of-duty-security-and-enforcement-policy

To contact Activision
choose mw3 then gameplay then crashes then click create a support ticket. https://support.activision.com/options?

Also it doesn't matter what your current name is if your old name got reported you will still receive a warning or ban.

Why do I have to change my name

Why do I have to change display name

Display name needs change

Account name needs change

iv. Related to drugs, sex, alcohol, or criminal activity; But Cheech and Chong smokin weed is OK?

This is a pointless thread, your name will get banned but if you add a random number/letter in the end the name is fine, Activision just has broken systems everywhere

You can't circumvent the name.

This thread is for people who don't know why their name needs changed and what to do when they get the notification.

I know I was thinking the same thing when I read their terms of service. Especially with the mode that says get high.

But you...can. My friend literally did that months ago while we were trying to play co-op, couldn't use his name for no reason so he just...put a 2 on it.

When he gets reported if he gets reported he would get a ban.

For what? It's just a normal name that got banned for literally no reason.

if it didn't violate the rules above then you didn't need to change your name in the first place you could of contacted Activision and send it to them asking why you received a message about name.

Tell them you know the name didn't violate any of their rules and ask them if you have to change the name or not then screenshot what they say saved it for your records.

Then contact them back if you didn't change name and receive a ban.

I don't know what the name was, you said adding a number fixed it which is circumventing the name which can result in a ban but that if they get reported.

That all I said.

Bro you are trying too hard in these forums...

Edit: From my experience as well, Acti cares less about names than anything. I seen some messed up names with little to not action against them. ッ Wish there was action taken against them.

Another edit: Also that post above is completely false. They likely got warned because Activision decided to put a report system into MW2 with no actual moderation into it so you could get several little crybabies mad and they would report you in every category and you would just get hit with warnings or bans. They just simply don't care what happens towards your account. It's kinda why the warnings shouldn't be taken seriously to begin with unless you are actively doing things that could get your account ban after a warning. (Example being: Slurs of any kind.) Regular trash talk isn't counted towards the reports iirc. They made it a bit more lenient.

Activision reviews each report and they been banning people with inappropriate names since world at war.

Which is why they are less common to encounter them and Xbox and Playstation also bans those type of people as well if reported directly to them which when cross play wasn't a thing people went straight to the source when reporting and some still do when they see your Playstation and Xbox name under Activision name if it violates their rules or simply offensive.

Reason some people make these offensive names is because they think it is funny but then they get ban permanently or temporarily then they change their tune or they continue to get banned everytime they make a account for those platforms or in game.

The post isn't false lol. Use a offensive name wait till reported then face the consequence.

You can use a offensive name for as long as you want but when someone encounters you and doesn't like it one bit they will report you then you will get ban end of story.

Something tells me you didn't play MW2 since the report system was easily abused.

Was victim of the abuse. Mic muted, would outplay someone and then get hit with warning and then bans. It was a mess. Made me laugh knowing it was evidence that I ticked someone off.

Don't get me started on their shadow ban system. You would kill someone or do extremely good in a match and would get hit with a cheater pool lobby for 2 weeks until you got verified. They need to take that system out of their games. Been there since MW 2019. Got hit with it in Cold War without warning and got put back into normal matchmaking 2 - 3 weeks later. No message. No apology. Support tried BSing their way out of it as well. Just crazy to me they treat their consumers this way.

Tl;dr: Report system was just for show in previous games up till MW 2019. MW 2019 really only cared for the "Cheater" category but that only put you into a cheater pool for 2 weeks until you got off the hook. MW2 system bad and was abused.

Edit: Also I wasn't calling getting banned for inappropriate names false I was just stating chances are that their friend did just have a normal name and got hit with their horrible system before the changes were made. Activision even admitted to the community that false reports were getting others in trouble lol.

My friend doesn't wanna bother. He simply downloaded the game so he could quickly do the Atomgrad raids. Nor should he bother, like

WHAT IS WRONG WITH "LINOANO" AS A NAME?

Why does he have to even bother changing his name by adding a simple 2 to it because the game has a terrible system for filters? Genuinely, that was the most stupid episode of random ♥♥♥♥ I've ever seen.

Lol i played every Call of Duty.

But you should be more specific which mw2 you talking about here.

Mw2 2009 or mw2 2022. The report system was never for show they just never sent notifications before. By sending notifications they now increase people actually reporting as they now know their report was actually listen to.

And the game is international so a name could be okay in one language but not another.

But your not wrong about false reports but they do ban people for false reporting now. Not sure how good it is though.
