I just got to that level to see this and it says either or. Like Level up gun to level X "Or" do daily challenge Y. I don't like that, who knows how long before that becomes mandatory... But right now it seems it's an optional way to unlock attachments other than levelling up the guns themselves.
as far as the challenges go, there are a few rewards in the armory that need 30/60/90 daily challenges, im already over 30 working on that 90 count reward only playing zombies. do the bounty contracts with a melee weapon pack a punched and element attached, then the bosses are a joke.
There are 16 weapons, 5 Aftermarket Parts ((Attachments)), 8 perks, 12 equipment, 9 field upgrades and 10 kill strikes. Total of 58 items are locked behind this. Most of the new stuff is indeed locked behind it, and a lot of the old stuff like the gunship kill strike and so forth are also locked behind it. What is even worse is they give you daily challenges where you need to kill x amount of enemies with an item that is locked within this system too. The whole armory unlock system is a massive joke and is designed for nothing more then to waste peoples time, keep them in game.
