Not only that but Xlab offered a way to play their older games safely since playing the games now is a security risk. The devs don't keep up with their old games so the community did it for them and they went after them. You also still needed to buy the game and they'd even advertise when the games went on sale. It's just blatantly scummy. NO one should defend them in this situation.
The other situation though, I do not understand at all since now it's no longer safe to play older CoD games and they do not care about their older games.
Just because its billion dollar company doesnt make it an excuse to not legally pursue offenders of your property.
To play mods you always buy a game first, but if there isnt a requirement to buy the game then that means developers have striked a deal with the publisher/developer, something people do a lot with Source engine mods.
SM2 devs didnt get a legal permission for such action, hence they got taken down and rightfully so. End of story really.
The fact is that the creators KNEW what they were doing was illegal and they did it anyway. Furthermore, Valve ALLOWED IT to happen on their platform. I would be suing Valve as well.
Is it better than what CoD is today? yes. Is greed the main reason for this lawsuit? Probably.
Is Activision a PoS company? ABSOLUTELY. However, The law is the law and copyrights exist precisely for this very reason. to keep people from stealing your IP and running away with your customers.
You don't have to pursue the law in every instance and some devs/companies, good ones, would actually encourage or are happy to have a community that passionate to make mods/create ways to play their old games without risks. They could even try working with them/hiring them. This screams greed and insecurity.
Look at how CS became a thing. A full on mod using assets of a different game and instead of shutting it down it was encouraged and helped grow by devs who were impressed by their fans.
Again the biggest insult right now is the fact Activision REFUSES to make their old games safe and playable. So the community came in to do it for them. Activision response towards being able to play their OLD games? Cease and desist... Now you can't play their older games without being at risk. People have every right to be mad at them for this. Legality or not this should be a no brainer at who you should be upset at.
