Because your phone number is linked to your account.
If you get banned for cheating, your phone number is also banned, forcing you to get a new phone as well as a new PC to play again.
such nonsense, more data for them to sell...
if they get another data breach they'll have my number as well ffs.
Phone number has always been required for PC.
Then don't play.
If it's a problem for you, buy a burner PAYG phone and top it up once.
Got a steam login and steam guard, that's enough.
blame cheaters
they're your reason for it
Not true, I've been here 12 years, played MW2 since launch and yesterday was I asked to put in my number. I requested a refund, was denied Ive moved on and will no longer buy any new games from steam, They have essentially locked me out and are asking me for the key to invade my privacy, Yes I know DHS and CIA and china and Russia and everyone else has it but that is out of my control.
Hackers don't want my cell phone number, but marketers sure as heck do and you can't tell me that cell phone number databases aren't sold ALL THE TIME. Also, I don't allow Steam to store my credit card info so if Steam DOES have my card info then they have been lying.
