Required phone number in my situation
Here my situation, and I'm sure many others are in the same.

My wife and I currently have Verizon as our cell phone provider. We both work remote from home 100% of the time so we are always on our WiFi. Therefore we virtually never use any data from our data plan. In November, we are planning to switch to Mint Mobile, a pre-paid carrier. We'll still have our current phone numbers and SMS capabilities though.

But why in the hell would we continue to flush thousands of dollars down the toilet to Verizon every year for their service when we don't hardly use it?? Sure, we can afford Verizon, but I'd rather enjoy that savings elsewhere and I'm sure as hell am not going to continue to throw my money away at Verizon just so I can play COD. That's stupid as hell yet this is exactly what Activision is expecting people to do.

I pre-paid for this game, so at this point I have three questions;

1. If I provide my Verizon phone number before I switch carriers, will I still be ok after I switch to Mint Mobile in November?

2. Will Steam players be expected to provide a phone number since we don't have to go through battle.net?

3. How do I go about getting a refund for this game depending on the above questions?

I understand Activisions goal they are TRYING to do with this policy, but it is discriminatory, it's screwing over a lot of legit players and if I had a million dollars to bet, I'd bet this doesn't do a damn thing to prevent people from cheating.

Thanks to anyone who answers my questions above.

1. Mint mobile works fine.

2. Yes. You can choose to use the one attached to your Steam account.

Thank you for the helpful answers to my questions. If Mint Mobile will work fine, then I don't have a reason to get a refund.

Take his advice... hope more people do. I mean it's not like you NEED the game to exist. Activision needs it's loyal "fans" to keep paying if they want to though.

Also did anyone see that phone requirement in the store page? Cause I havent... and that should be criminal. (Whether you agree or can use said phone is irrelevant... you should be made aware before you drop the cash.)

I didn't see anywhere that I was going to be required to provide a cell phone number in order to play, much less the stipulations of which carriers would or wouldn't be accepted. I only found out about this today due to a video that showed up in my recommended feed on YouTube. Otherwise I would have had no idea.

People say it's not discriminatory. I guess if you think of race discrimination when you think of that word, you're right. But if you deny access based merely on what cell carrier they have, how is that not? Is that not the same as telling Rosa Parks, "sorry you can't get on the bus if you don't wear certain colored shoes"? Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see how it's different.

All I know is, in an effort to "try" and prevent hackers, they are denying access to legit players based on a requirement that has nothing to do with Activision or game play itself. Activision is saying, "if you don't have these cell phone carriers, you can't play". How is that different from them saying, "if you don't live in these cities, you can't play the game"? Would anyone like it if that's the solution they imposed? I highly doubt it. Same difference though as far as I'm concerned.

I may not be affected, but in principle, it's damn stupid to unfairly affect legit players this way in what will probably be a feeble attempt to stop hackers that probably won't even work. Not to mention someone will hack Activision and steal everyone's cell phone numbers and sell them to robo callers or scammers. It's amazing how easily people go along with things these days, no questions asked and excuse everything away. it will be easy to round you all up for the detention camps.

It is listed as a requirement on the store page.

Nah, just your account and cc numbers, pin codes, and a high res photo of your id. Both sides please. If game don't sell well, at least they can sell... I mean, accidentally get hacked and loose your data :steamhappy:

my phone number has never been attached to my steam profile, putting personal details online or in the hands of multi million dollar companies increasingly gets hacked on mass ! so where possible i try not to partake in things that get too personal, i couldnt play the game unless i put my number on my steam account, no pre warning before buying , i like online anonymity and increasingly these corps that have shown us they are not capable of looking after such private information coherse us into becoming less anonymous by letting them know everything about us

Means nothing to me....been using 2fa on steam for a long time now.

Of course it's discriminatory. It's discriminating against those that don't have a phone full stop and fact.

Yes there are many 'discussions' I have already had about this so I won't repeat myself by answering them, again.
I enjoyed the beta, I was looking forward to this game. I think I'm going to get a refund because contrary to what I was told here, Mint Mobile isn't going to be allowed. Again, I'll still be on a post-paid when the game releases, but will be switching in November. I don't want to all of a sudden not be able to play the game just because I switched who my cell phone provider is, that's stupid as hell.

To restrict people like this for a video game that only has a shelf life for 2-3 years?? Ignorant. Even those of you with post-paid plans should be against this out of principle.

All these years nothing has prevented cheaters from cheating, and you think this is somehow going to be the magic bullet? You're fooling yourselves. They are called cheaters and hackers for a reason, they now how to bypass these kinds of things or will easily figure it out.

The only thing this is going to do is prevent millions of legit players from playing, cheaters most likely aren't going anywhere. Then what?
