The original CoD MW 2 (2009) has an RCE exploit

Because I was interested in this game I went and looked at the original again. I'm not seeing news about this anywhere with the new game coming out but the original MW2 has a Remote Code Execution (RCE) exploit that's possible when playing PvP. That means that someone you're PvPing with can literally run code on your machine. This is the same danger that made From Software decide to take down Dark Souls 3, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls: Remastered servers until it was patched.

It's safe in singleplayer (or offline if you're extra worried) and I don't know if Spec-Ops is affected. If you only play with people you trust you should be fine. I'm sure the new games don't have this problem at all. The big issue is that these old games have not been updated in ages. According to SteamDB there was an update to five CoD games on July 30, 2022 but that update doesn't seem to have affected the RCE exploit, or anything I can find, at all.

Apparently every Call of Duty game from Black Ops 3 and before is affected, though I don't know any specific details for games other than MW2. There's a mod called "♥♥♥♥" that might fix it and protect players but I've never used it so I can't vouch for it.

I'm not a programmer so I can't give deep technical answers but if anyone has any questions about this I'd be happy to answer them.

there's a reason most people use modden clients for the older games nowadays, like plutonium

I know mw3 was affected because some guys got bad stuff happening to them like 1 or 2 years back. Can't recall what but yeah activision does not care about it's customers.
