Absolutely not. Unless you are extremely, and I do mean extremely interested in the Bronze Age setting, even then, I would not recommend this especially as your first game in this series.

I would recommend Rome 2, Napoleon, or Shogun 2 as a great first title since they are relatively speaking fairly modern games graphically and have the Qol features a lot of players today might expect. Your choice will probably be determined by your interest in the setting. These are all good games at this point, with a good amount of well developed and established mods.

I would also recommend picking them up on sale, absolutely no sense in paying full price for them at this point. Good luck.

I would recommend picking a game that has an era you are interested in.

The best total war games are :

Shogun 2.
Three Kingdoms.
Warhammer and warhammer 2.

I also enjoyed Thrones of britannia because i love that era so as i said thats why I would pick something you have an interest in. If you like the idea of egyptian war and that bronze age then you will like this game. I havent played it but the campaign looks really good (and is reviewed as such) some people seem to complain about the combat but again i cant comment.

I would recommend three kingdoms as one of the most beautiful tw games and also with the most in depth Diplomacy and networks of alliances. But if you dont care for diplomacy again then the warhammer games would be better as they are more army fight based.

So yes it will be a good game but which one to get depends on your historical (or none if you want to go warhammer and monsters) bias and tastes.

Do not under any circumstances get Rome 2. Its one of the most broken and weakest entries into the game with terrible AI and a very boring campaign. It is the game i bought a new pc for and the game that nearly turned me against CA. Do not buy that game, maybe try it if you can get it for free lol.

As mentioned above, pick the period and setting you like most, though I would not get any game older than Empire because those are quite janky by today's standards.

no. if you want historic go with medieval 2, rome(old but gold both of em), semi-historic go for 3 kingdoms, and if you dont care about historic or not, definitely go for wh2/3

expanding some info: this game is a VERY weak total war game, its basically a cancelled DLC for a saga game that got price gouged to 60e..... game should be around 30-40e.

I was very on the fence about recommending M2, but decided that its extremely outdated path finding and lack of range indicators and other qol features might mean it wouldn't be a good first title for someone with zero experience in total war but probably has modern expectations.

NoThis game is too difficult to start; Shogun 2 is still close enough in time to have decent graphics and at the same time have accessible gameplay mechanics.

This game is a bit more difficult for many veterans nevermind newcomers. I do feel since it is one of the most refined Total War games you could pick it up pretty fast. To be honest I think you should pick a game with the era you like the most. Ancient Egypt has always been pretty interesting to me. If you feel like you would like this era i highly recommend it

Shogun 2 is slightly dated but it's still modern enough, it follows the old TW formula before the changes in Rome 2 and it's still a great game.

If you want something closer to the new formula with HP bars and damage then Rome 2 or three kingdoms, pick the setting you prefer.

If you don't care about history and just want the most expansive TW game, given the most attention and with the most unique factions then go for Warhammer 3, treat WH1 and 2 as simple DLC for WH3, which is what they are.

Get the setting that looks interesting to you. They are all competent games, although you may find some of the older games a bit too dated.

My all time favorite is Shogun 2, although it now feels a bit rough and dated by modern standards.

Three Kingdoms, Troy and Pharaoh are recent releases and feel polished, but you have to like the historical setting.

Atilla and its DLCs are a safe choice due to the very wide historical scope and unit diversity with good replayability. It is also the last TW game to have naval combat. Rome 2 is also rich but mechanically less polished.

Warhammer games are absolutely amazing if you like fantasy. They offer the most battle diversity and replayability but the campaign map mechanics are simplified and limited. I recommend the third installment for the Immortal campaign.

I don't recommend games older than Shotgun 2.

Out of all of them, the easiest to get into for beginners are probably Shotgun 2 and Pharaoh (if you can get it discounted).

These are personal recommendations. All opinions are valid.

Medieval 2, Rome, Napoleon, Shogun 2, Three Kingdoms, Warhammer 2, Attila. Also, remember to check huge amount of overhaul mods for these titles.

Which historical Total war would you consider the easiest to start with? (no mods)

The problem with the question is that it seems to assume that all the TW games share the same mechanics. They don't. For example, three kingdoms is the only one that has generals dueling. Never mind the warhammer series which is a whole different kettle of fish that comes with flying units even.

I would say to go for the setting that interests you the most. Also take the price into consideration if you are from a region that has poor regional pricing.

Since you are usure, my opinion is that you would be better served by one of the cheaper titles or the older ones that go on sale often. Personally, I would lean more towards three kingdoms.

Shogun 2 I would say. Limited unit variety will be extremely easy to learn for anyone even who do not have any historical or military knowledge whatsoever. Game play in battles and campaign is very straight forward.

I would agree with the rest that for starting to learning the ropes I would recommend Shogun 2.
While Rome 2 had a kind of big overhaul and looking simple on first sight it actually had a hidden 3 recource system which is one of the most complex from all the games.
So I would recommend Shogun 2 as it is close enough while with Japan has one of the enclosed spaces which you can so limit your scope or Warhammer I as it is in a similar way limited and so having with the Dwarfes an easy race whith an easy start position
