Chariots - Completely useless?

They are slow, don't do a lot of damage, and get completely bodied by even basic spearmen.

Yet these things are wildly expensive.

What's the point?

They're considerably faster than anything else on the battlefield. You basically have three options:
1) use skirmish/ap chariots to harass and/or demolish heavy armored units, or any bothersome units
2) use fast, light or med chariots to encircle the enemy and either eliminate their ranged units, or charge into engaged melee from the rear, or
3) use heavy chariots as shock cav to charge literally anything that's not spearmen.

Have you seen Braveheart?

Use chariots/cav to crash into flanks/rear of enemy units. Or run down archer units. Stay away from speamen.

It may be because the only chariots I've used so far are some Tier 6 elite ones - but they are absolute kings of the battlefield. They can annoy the ♥♥♥♥ out of the AI, shoot down lighter infantry and charge the ♥♥♥♥ out of anything (spearmen obviously via rear charge)
