The order you select them then aligns them in that order in the battle line.
If you want multiple control groups you can do it this way. and then select all groups and march your battle line as one.
Typically i like to use space bar to clearly to fine tune the exact position the army stops and forms up.
Edit: To expand on above. You can select each unit you want in your group and draw out the battle line you want. You only need to press ctl and number you want to give each group. But like i say it is essential you lock the group to fix its formation or they run at different speeds and change its formation. This is the little padlock on the group number bar. To move all your army you simply just need to press ctl A and it will select all your groups. You can then select point on map or carefully select and line up how your formation will arrive. Use space bar to help see the unit chevrons and arrows to see the final unit positions.
