When in a battle you can press space bar to bring up the overlays option. You lock or unlock the unit banners there.
EDIT: Just to elaborate on this, when you press space and hold you can see overlays at a glance, you will need to set your preferences up. You will notice a little button on the right hand side of your screen half way up. Its called show overlay options. if you cant see it, just press space bar and it will appear.
Open this panel and you will have a list of items that you can toggle to show on space bar or you can lock / unlock show at all times. The item you are looking for is unit banners, just unlock it. You can do this with pretty much all the other UI overlays and decide which ones you want to show at all times, which ones you want to show when you press and hold space bar only and which ones you don't want to show at all by disabling them.
Setting up the space bar items can be useful for certain things. For example, normally i like to see all the trees and bushes during battle. However, when fighting starts in trees i sometimes cannot see. You can set the space bar settings to make the foliage disappear when you press and hold the space bar down and it comes back again when you release it.
Sorry for a double post, but just to ensure you receive notification. I have edited my post above this one to help you find what you are looking for. Hope it helps.
