Subject: Critical Rendering Issue (D3D12 GPU Crash – HRESULT: 0x887a0006) in Age of Mythology: Retold
DETAILS
Game Build #: 100.18.21333.0
Game Branch: Final / Stable
Operating System: Windows 11 Home 64-bit (Build 26100)

THE ISSUE I ENCOUNTERED
The game consistently experiences rendering failures and graphical artifacts when playing scenarios or cinematics. Visual glitches include purple or pink lines, flickering terrain, and broken shadows. These are followed by a full GPU hang and crash.

According to the MythRenderLog.txt, the crash is caused by DirectX 12 commands passed by the engine that result in a device removal error (HRESULT: 0x887a0006). A page fault occurs on the DepthBufferCopy resource, and the command history shows invalid rendering instructions at the time of failure.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE
100% — This happens every time under the same conditions (starting any mission or cinematic).

REPRODUCTION STEPS
Here's how to reproduce the issue:

1.) Launch Age of Mythology: Retold
2.) Start any campaign mission or cinematic
3.) Visual artifacts appear shortly after loading (pink/purple lines, broken shadows)
4.) The game eventually freezes or crashes due to GPU failure

EXPECTED RESULT
The game should render all terrain, units, and shadows correctly without graphical artifacts. Gameplay should remain stable and not cause GPU crashes. The engine should avoid invalid DirectX 12 instructions that lead to device removal errors.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Using "-dx11" reduces the issue but does not fully eliminate the artifacts.

All GPU drivers are up to date (clean install via DDU).

No overlays or background utilities are running.

Other DX12 games function correctly on this system.

I only played the combat and daily battle modes and noticed the same problem, it was solved by changing to DirectX 11, I didn't see the other modes or cinematics.

I confirm the same problem and changing to DirectX 11 solved it, for now.
