Population limit
In the old versions, population cap has always been an issue. You either have to severely limit your economy, or only have a small army and try spamming new units as they die...
In the patch notes for this beta, it states 'Significantly increased population.', but in videos I have seen so far, it doesn't seem to be the case.
Did they actually address this issue? I haven't bought the game yet as this really frustrated me in EE, compared to every other Age game we barely have units on the map... :AOEHouse:

Population is indeed higher, and a lot of Myth Units cost less pop. You can now mass an army of Minotaurs.

And what did they do to make it higher? Did they remove the building limit on houses, or..?

There's no limit, now you can go above 300 (idk if there's a max) and you can build 16 houses instead of 10

I'd have hoped for the house limit to be per town center, rather than absolute, but it is what it is.

I hope there is no pop limit as it only existed as older Pc's could not deal with it. Thats a way past issue.

So far the highest pop i got to is 360 which is crazy thats a big number of units you can have to just steamroll your enemies

I am pretty sure that in the older versions you could get 300 pop as well... So the only thing they changed was a bit more houses, that won't help much. Thanks :)
Ofc in maps where you can build more than 3 TCs it's gonna be a lot, but on small maps the pop cap should be really low, similar to the old versions.

like the first post already said though, they also changed the pop requirements for units, especially myth units, which also allows for bigger armies. so even on smaller maps you should notice a difference.

You can have up to 16 Houses now, and many Myth Units have lower population requirements.

I just hope they double the original up to 20 Houses per player, instead of 16 as it is now. 20 is a cleaner number.

Well even then, most human units cost 2-3 pop. If myth units would cost 2-3 pop as well, that's still not that big of an improvement if the popcap is low. 50 2 pop units are still 100 popspace... And that's only 50 units. Or 33 of 3 pop units... In aoe2/aoe3 you can easily have 100+ military units while having an economy as well, independent of the map size.
Maybe this could be solved if they would limit the popcap at 300-400 and the TCs would give different popspace depending on the mapsize. The less TCs on the map, the more popspace they provide.

AoE2 pop limit in 1999 is 200, nothing to do with 'old pc hardware'

Balancing factors such as myth units and one of the first (if not the first) AOE games to feature unique playstyles for each civ likely influenced the decision

Also one of the bigger RTS that has a pop limit is starcraft 2 and the last expansion came out in 2015, it has nothing to do with pc hardware

I’ve gotten up to 480 on the gigantic maps. Houses are limited but I don’t think town centres are, so you can build them all over the settlements to increase your pop cap.

They are limited by the amount of settlements. Normally you only get 2 (+ your starting one) on 1v1 maps.
