Extended vs. Retold?
I dont play vs people. I just want a fun, working game. Why is there even two games on the store at the same price?

Extended is a remaster that came out 11 years ago and brought Age of Mythology to Steam for the first time. They released a dlc for it which added the Chinese which had it's own campaign.

Retold is a new remaster which changes the graphics, the effects, portraits etc. They are bringing the Chinese in a new dlc that is coming early next month and is done from scratch. Not the same as the Extended Editions because the Chinese in that one was controversial. A lot didn't like it.

Retold comes with a new Arena of the Gods mode. There will be another dlc coming in the future that hasn't been announced yet. You also get the original games campaign along with the original expansions.

If you're deciding which one to get, Retold is the newer version with more improvements, support, and will end up having more content than the Extended Edition.

I play the campaigns and then spend my time playing skirmish. Either game is worth picking up to play single player but at this point Retold is the one that will offer more in the long run.

Last time I checked AoM: Retold apparently has higher system requirements than Extended as well such as for example AoM: Extended contrary to AoM: Retold does not have a RAM requirement and the game may not work properly for anyone who does not have enough RAM to play AoM: Retold. If you meet up with the minimum requirements for both graphics card and RAM then probably AoM: Retold is better game than AoM: Extended, but if it is the other way around where you do not meet up with the minimum requirements and at the same time you do not care about multiplayer then perhaps Extended is more practical to get than Retold besides maybe not buying the Chinese dlc if buying the Extended version. Just keep in mind that Extended was abandoned while Retold is the current version that is being supported on Steam, but unclear as to why Extended is not a little bit cheaper to buy than Retold at full price where in my personal opinion AoM: Extended at full price should be reduced to $25 instead of it staying at $30 at least in part because some people might never buy the Chinese dlc due to its mostly negative reviews on Steam in addition to the fact that last time I checked only 1k people approximately currently still play AoM: Extended.
