Edit. I even forgot ro address part of your ranting. Have the money and/or want to play? Buy it. No money and/or want to play? Don't buy it.
Read the reviews. If you don't believe them, fine. If you do, fine. You're a thinking human being. Make up your own mind and spend accordingly.
What are you even talking about?
It is a far superior version to the Extended edition and original release, these devs did a great job, which is rare these days.
What are you even talking about, if you know anything about steam and review bombs you’d know that if die hard fans of the original were unhappy with this game they’d review bomb tf out of it instantly, Especially after making people pay to play early. Also the voices are just re-recorded, none of the dialogue changed. There’s also a mod that can change it to original voice if you really care that much about it 🤡
Well they had to do the same for aoe4 and it was a big flop.
I agree it's bad. I refunded it pretty fast. (played 'all' the original games at one point and I was a fan of aoe2 and aom)
I found this version to be 'worse'. They focused on visuals, but not gameplay. Even then, it feels like aoe3 and plays weirdly. Arguably it looks cartoony, and less detailed than before.
Even if they could adjust the camera a bit and make it so you don't have to 'go into options' and totally mes around with it.. so you can 'begin gameplay' on the game.. it is not even "impressive" in details. It is cartoony and less detailed, and they just zoomed in on the buildings a little bit.
But in an RTS with many units your goal is to play, not to see the villager wave its hand 'over' the berry bush (even that, on the older one, looked better like they actually pick the berries.. now it uses like some aoe3 animation for it , that looks twice as cartoony, lol).
They alienated probably 20-40% players (some players are really horrible PCs running this, even if not mine), just by updating to DX12. Just a clear dumb mistake and example of something useless to do for a '2003 game remake', it's not a remake actually it's yet another mod-up. It's clear that was not required. DX9 is a pretty solid and really compatible renderer. They just had to get an 'expert' and it'd clean up nicely. Too bad they suck at programming or insights like that.
The original one still runs the best. The EE one just 'ran slower' since they did it wrong, but it was not totally too slow; EE did always have some crash but if you restart the game once you play, it will be fine; they could've just fixed that up tho.
This one is just aoe3 engine by aoe4 devs. Looks worse and feels bad. They seemingly gave up and said "ok we faile but we can sell this to some 10 yr olds".
I don't think it's really good like AoM was. Even the style, arguably, the old one "looked a lot better". Do you really look at this childish cartoony look and say "this one is better"? The old one was 'styled' but it was still nice and 3d; it's up to the eye of the beholder.
It's pretty clearly a flop and they could not make it good in any way. It's designed now for 10 year olds, and they got a bunch of bots to spam good reviews; if they aren't bots, they are just really illogical people.
Like the kind who always should boycott scams but they never do it and so I fully support scamming them with bad quality like this.
They are the 'type' like they are separate from the game and even though they produced 'low quality' (they did try their best though), they will just sit back and try to make as much sales as possible now. (with that mentality, like if they were honest and trying, now they are like 'hehehh.. now thati failed.. f* everything')
Even with all that work I'd say like '75%' of this is still like all the original game's contents (code, engines, details, etc). The other 'small parts' were ilke.. what.. did you get a college kid to come in and -let's update to DX12! -lets make it more cartoony and less detailed! -lets plop the old stuff on aom onto AoE3's engine, since we claim it was updated a bit more! -lets make it look like aoe4/aoe3 a bit!. Ok. Done. That's about it for this "game".
Clearly they just don't have that "creativity" and eye for detail that made like Age of Mythology by the original devs the top online game back when it came out.
I'm not excited and I don't think anyone with a brain will be excited to play it.
Bar some bots, sponsors (people paid to market and don't even care one bit about it), and there are always some lower IQs in the gayming world, I don't see any improvement.
The beauty of a flowing game with like the beautiful big walls and the other stuff, on the original is like 'woah'. On this it's like "12 yr old mode" if it's even a game. It just can't have that same grand feel. (I am not one of those who says 'woah the old blocks in doom were so nostalgic'!!, I am more like saying, the original 3d actually did look more detailed and its so sad people r getting fooled on this fact alone; it is not a polygon/detail increase but more like a styleistic choice that ended up reverting to inferior 'beta' graphics).
Most of the 'visual change' I would say is just by putting it on the aoe3 engine, not by actual work. The buildings all remind me of that 'look' you get of an aoe3 town center or a building because it's copy-paste (same orientation and general look)
I am thinking of enjoying the original one with a few games while it still lasts. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Incidentally, games you've played in the last two weeks show in Recently Played even after refunding. It's not on your list.
