How do I select units in my group/selection?

If I have a mixed army in my selection, how do i tell only my archers to attack a unit, or tell only my cavalry to move to a positron. It seems I can only control the group as a whole. In AOEIV you just click the box inside your group selection, but that doesn't work here.

Shift click on the archer icon and it selects only them
Ctrl click deselects them from the group so you can manipulate all the other units

Thanks. Not quite working as intended though because if I shift click a unit, I have to reselect all other units again to issue additional commands. I can put my units into separate groups, but I can't combine then. So if i have 4 groups I want to control individually, I can't group them together without deleting the other groups.

As a workaround:

Group your army (shift+1)
Select the group (1)
Shift click the unit you want and issue orders.
Select group (1)
Shift click the unit you want....
Repeat...

I really wish the game had the Starcraft 2 mechanic where pressing tab while having a whole army selected cycles through unit types (tab for all marines, tab for all tanks, tab for all thors - etc) and then right clicking something has only that group selected among your whole army attack that target without every other unit type in your army following suit too

It is bizarre to me that such an essential feature is not yet implemented into the game.
