Is the AoE4-A.I. a threat or a punching bag?
I got the impression that at least the cheating A.I. in AoE4 can defeat the average human player...
Hope it's on your radar, but it would be great to tweak the unit attack priorities a little <3
For example if I a-move beyond a wall, the units will try to go around the wall (no matter how big the distance) instead of attacking the wall. Other small stuff like not prioritizing the right targets can also be frustrating. Or the units stopping mid combat or trying to move around the target and "regroup" while being attacked.
Small stuff goes a long way. I love the game! Huge improvement over the original! Got 26 hours in it so far, but I am sometimes getting quite frustrated, especially when it's a difficult mission. Or villagers just stopping in their tracks when I send them to garrison somewhere because they were hit by an enemy. If you can look into that, it will only elevate the game further.
Compared to the average rts ai, I think its decent. Just as a comparison to all the rts ai I've played, I think its better than aoe4, aoe3, aom extended edition, and a number of old rts that had absolutely horrible ai (like brood war and most c&c games), worse than aoe2. Then I'd say its a sidegrade to sc2 (sc2's on release was worse, but now sc2's ai seems harder to beat but has some really bad abuse cases), and rise of nations (I think rise of nations ai is weaker, but its less obnoxious to play against because it doesn't do things like suicide its whole army to snipe vills or constantly suicide its army and villagers because you placed a larger army than theirs in the middle of the map).
I think its a lot like, a better version of aoe3's ai. It has some of the same pitfalls, namely it feels like if you get map control against the ai it just breaks (both of them will keep trying to fight you, and send villagers to places it cannot possibly defend them). Both seem rush oriented and simply throw units at you until you make a mistake (and if they're not cheating or you get ahead, this simply ends up being constant suicide). And both have poor late game economic management (aom is nowhere near as bad as aoe3 though, aoe3's ai would often flat out break and take an hour to get past age 3 even with 50% cheats while you afk'd waiting for it, aom ai definitely can fall behind and take much longer than it should to catch up but it doesn't ever feel like it's literally broken).
Oh and since one of your posts mentioned aoe4, I'll say in comparison to aoe4 it feels less broken and stronger for the same level of cheats. Its still the same concept though, if the ai wins its because it simply threw units at you and dove your defenses and its massive cheats made its suicidal attacks worth the idle time. But unlike aoe4, if you survive 20 minutes or so it won't stop attacking, start camping all its units on sacred sites while you destroy its base, and/or try to build a wonder (and I think its harder to raid aom's ai early, but that's probably more because I'm worse at aom than anything inherent to the ai).
I don't think it can play water though. None of the age ai's have really been able to play water imo (aoe2's is the closest, but its still far worse on water than land).
TLDR: I think its good... for an rts ai. Not great. And if you take out the "for an rts ai" then its no longer good.
wow
Please bring back the Builder AI :/
Arguably one of the best AI to use for Long games vs Titan difficulty AIs
It rarely makes myth units beyond the first few and the ones they get on age up. It still doesn't work well in water, it doesn't properly utilize map choke points, and it employs the same strategy every game depending on the personality you chose at the start of the game.
