What's the best strategy for auto eco?

I've noticed in my last game that villagers were on auto queue which resulted in me getting overwhelmed by the number of new citizens. So I do consider trying out auto economy. But I'm not sure how it works. Do you set it e.g. to feudal and then keep changing the strategy over and over? I liked the auto economy of EE2, where you simply assigned your idles to one of the 6 resources. But here, the resources expire too fast.

If you set one of the auto economies, and your wood line gets raided, will the ai automatically move villagers from a nearby gold mine to the raided wood line? Does it move to the next gold mine, if the first one is expired and builds a mining camp there? Is it possible to have some idle villagers with auto economy? E.g. for forward building / repairing?
