Honestly AoM has always been a bit difficult to balance, I don't think Retold is any worse in this regard compared to the original. We'll see balance patchnotes in time, but bugfixes are first priority.
I've started playing that mode because there are WAY too many settlements, and I had one match last for over an hour because there was a single friggin ship hidden in the map that had enemy units on it.
When it comes to RTS remasters, AI is always what kills me. The devs have literal decades worth of professional replays to noob replays to go through. Couldn't they just have simulated build orders performed by actual players? Couldn't they create some rudimentary machine learning AI in-house with the ability to mimic real players' moves? "Standard" AI would perform with ~1000 ELO players' replays. "Hard" with 1200, "Titan" with 2000+, etc. No cheating, just good.
For Age series in particular, I feel like developing an in-house skirmish learning AI will be worth the investment, seeing how they will continue to pump out new faction DLCs for AoE2, AoE4, AoM, and AoE3.
Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long-run, not having to code skirmish AI for every unique thing each DLC civ/faction has?
I'm not sure about machine learning, mimicing players and all that.. but 20+ years later and the AI still doesn't understand how to use boats?
Another thing that bothers me about AI, is micro managing or input reading, depending on the game.
For example, in Microsofts now failed Halo series, in Halo Wars, the AI will micro manage every unit to move away from your dooms day beam in an instant, I haven't really watched the AI in this game, but I feel like they move in a similar fashion, with micro managing happening in an instant, from moving units to building structures.
On another note, I did finally use the implode spell, and it feels really, really powerful.
I don't know how it works with sucking in people, but it can demolish anything smaller than a barracks, and in a very wide radius too.
Walls? Gone. Workers? Gone. Houses? Gone.
I didn't really use up any MP/Favor on the way up to the fourth tier, either, so I had a bunch saved up.
After building the Wonder, I was casting Implode as soon as it ended! It was insane! Allah-Akbar a couple units into the middle of their base and boom. Find where the workers are all gathered at and BOOM.
Enemy force en-route? SKADOOSH.
but maaaan th emultiplayer is so absolute ♥♥♥♥ i never got to play multiplayer in original but comnig from aoe2 remake that actually works (most of th etime) to this where you get stuck for like a minute trying to join a game with 33 ping or being stuck at a broken starting game where you cant cancel quit out or anything beside alt f4 or wait minutes for it to cancel automaticly is just awfull
also bonus wtf is up with the weird square aprts at some of the fountain decorations? i guess its supposed to be water but it looks like they forgot to add it
When you are in mythic age, there is an upgrade you can buy that lets you see all enemies on the map. It costs more the more enemies there are.
It's clearly an upgrade designed exactly to combat someone hiding something somewhere on the map just to waste everyone's time.
They might be able to do basic build order, but only up to a certain point. And there'd be issues. Like what if the player harasses them and throws a wrench in that build order, then what does the AI do?
As far as making AIs just play at like 2000 elo level, that AI hasn't been invented by mankind yet. They've been trying for decades. Maybe with all the advancements in AI lately someone will figure something out soon. But for now, no, the AI that simply gets "smarter" as you turn up the difficulty is still beyond our current technology. That's why AIs tend to "cheat" when you turn up difficulty in pretty much any game ever. It's not because the developers wouldn't rather have a smarter AI. It's because that's literally the only way they have to make it harder to beat after a certain point.
I personally have 3 big gripes with the game right now.
1st:
-Pathfinding is the worst one I have ever seen in any RTS so far at times (and I played base SC1 before BW back in the days).
Mostly it's fine, but if you run around in bigger armies (40+ military units), while buildings surround you, units tend to either completely ignore commands or go into the literal opposite direction you tell them to go towards. (lets say you enter their base from top to bottom and just click back to top again to go out. Your entire army has the tendency to just go further down for whatever reason and just goes deeper, forcing you to commit. Not even talking about the bad bodyblocking and really dicey attackmove that makes units clutter on one target and chase them or run around the enemy army instead of attacking.)
2nd:
-Map vetos.
I genuinely deslike Water maps, since I feel like you are put so much under pressure to contest it, that it always comes down to the same one dimensional 4 minute double/triple dock shiprush game every game, and whoever loses control of it loses the game.
It's boring and unengaging to me.
If you like these maps from time to time, all power to you, but I would really prefer vetoing them out so I don't have to dodge 1/3 of my games I get matched into.
3rd:
-Let me keep myself busy while searching for a game.
Techtrees, gods, unit stats and post match history paired with statistics and graphs are not only great features to add and refine, but also should be available while searching for a match instead of being forced to watch "looking for games" for multiple minutes.
Anything I have missed that really tends to bother you personally guys?
I mean, water maps are no where near 1/3rd of the map pool. There's like, 2, in the ranked pool. I very rarely get put on one.
But also, i'm beginning to wonder if the water really matters. I just had one earlier where I totally dominated the water. And even with 10+ fishing ships out there, I was running out of food. It was taking FOREVER to get enough food to go to age 3. It seems like fishing really isn't the huge food income that it was in AoE 4.
I seriously wonder if I wouldn't have been better off just ignoring the water and making an army to kill him; Something I had to do anyway since boats don't have huge range or anything to shoot up onto land.
For me personally its not a big enough of an upgrade over AOM to make me want to play it. Not like how ao4 was to the series. I had read and watched videos about how it was going to be a lot more than just a simple remaster and while its better than most, its not enough for me
Not had the crashes and have seen a fair few bugs but they will be sorted I am sure.
But they have nerfed a lot from the first one.
I remember artillery ships out-ranging the towers? So using them is pointless. You may as well just beach an army and take out the tower as even normal soldiers are quicker than the ships. (and they are already on land)
They have nerfed the Atlanteans who just seem weaker and it isn't just the peasants. I use to rule with fanatics and now they are getting owned by the minor Norse troops.
Taking the nidhogg to be only Loki, who is already OP with all giants and insta-summon means why play any of the Norse except Loki. What benefits is there to Thor and Odin compared to Loki?
Things that just annoy me as I am being very pedantic on these.
Not a fan of having to build oracles to generate faith as I never used to build them at all.
I don't like that the Atlantean peasants don't carry relics on the back of the donkey anymore, it is waggling between their legs.
Tech tree doesn't appear to show the greek strongholds units.
Sometimes the gold caps on the end of the norse battering rams don't appear making me think I didn't get the upgrade.
Two Norse gods call Freya.
The graphics are the same but at slightly higher res.
