If you want a challenge but not super easy, I can recommend "Hard" to start off with. If you're not concerned about difficulty at all then "Moderate" will do just fine as a more relaxed playthrough.
That said, I enjoyed the campaign(s) immensely because it tells a good story ( which is rare in RTS games ) and has some good characters too with some laughs sprinkled in the dialog. The base game is 100% worthwhile just for the campaigns.
If you're unsure whether you want to continue playing, I definitely would recommend only buying the base game as it's cheaper than the "Premium Edition" as that one would contain 2 DLCs that are going to come out eventually.
If you like campaigns like the one in AoE 3 which also basically had a continuous story, then you will like this one too.
It has a few flaws but those are mostly just flaws carried across from the original campaign that were kept mostly out of faithfulness to the original. There are a few issues where the campaign hasn't really been updated to reflect all the new mechanics in Retold - some stages are easy to break with reusable GPs and none of them take advantage of the new Minor God bonuses.
I'd say if you've already played the campaign then it's not worth buying Retold on just the campaign alone but if you've never tried the AoM campaign then it's absolutely worth it.
If you're unfamiliar with how the Ages of games work a lot of the changes really help make it easy to bring new players into the mix by largely automating a lot of the decision making processes such as how many workers need to be tasked where for what priority as well. A first time, blind run will probably take you upwards of 30+ hours.
