We don't know, Aoe4 suffered being an early access title on release to reach deadlines, but it clawed itself back to get a bigger playerbase over the traditional aoe3tad+de3+esoc.
I don't think it will fail, that can only happen if they choose to abandon the game like EE due to budget constraints and how the new studios are set up for technical and content support.
So far, every AoE except 4 launched with a ranked ladder at release. I think Retold will follow that ;)
So I'm kinda hyped, but mostly for multiplayer
1. People could sync error the game at will to avoid losing
2. People crashed frequently
3. Mongol TC rush
4. Water Gameplay was garbage (French won every game)
+ bugs sticking around for quite a while before they got fixed, e.g. the Rus Relic one.
I remember that they had a Gentleman's agreement for Genesis (the 1st big AoE 4 tournament) where they asked players not to use this bug.
You know, people play more than just 2 and/or 4.
