Compulsion is a small studio. Small budget. Guess their marketing is
"Folks on game pass will see it show up when they log on"
Can't really speak on ads because I don't really get them that much, but it's been around.
found out about this game at least a year ago.
Is there a pasty white snowflake detector on Steam? It's alarms should be singing a song right here.
Anyway, fascists aside, OP is definitely...questionable...but MS really needs to up their support and advertising game. On the other hand their console naming conventions don't exactly spark optimism in that ever happening. Maybe they never recovered from that XBOX-TV-Sports-CAllADoody" go home debacle from 2013. The only ads I have seen (youtube ads) were HORRIBLE AI voice over the splash/logo picture (that I can see right here as the background) telling about the existence and vaguely about the story...especially with a game that lives from its visual THIS MUCH because of the peculiar style should really want to hit those notes at every beat...and we get a friggin AI voice directing us to the Game Pass legalese. That's almost as much setting it up for failure as it gets. But I'm not seeing much of anybody outside of individuals and parts of indie spaces stand up to racism etc either so I'm not keeping my hopes up.
As for the visbility on here, I agree somewhat, the game has been included time and again in "events", but Steam is a horrible mess. They're trying circumvent that with the events but since those events are shoddy at best, they get ever more convoluted just as much as the store in general. Steam is floded with literal trash and Valve is doing jack about it. Just like they're doing jack about the ever more rampant growing racism and other fascist leanings on here. They only really do something if it gets SO bad they CAN'T turn a blind eye to it anymore. The Domina dev was a fun episode of someone going super unhinged and facing the music. It really shouldn't have to get this bad though but here we are. It needs many many more people to wake up and see things for what they are rather than turning a blind eye for some brittle peace's sake.
side note about steam events: they literally mostly just spam store items that have the relevant tags, nobody actually looks at what is included, often enough there are even projects in there that devs had personally proclaimed dead years ago, "third party sales events" are possibly the best we can get until Valve finally cleans house.
That or that have adblock on.
You might want to actually look at what "word of mouth" there was and what happened to the studio regardless. Spoiler: they had big prominent placements and the studio got shuttered in spite of its success. The only thing that makes the success of a game is finding its audience. Goat Simulator for example would like to have a word or two.
