Stutters in the Showcase Tralier
What was going on with the Xbox Games Showcase showing of this? It felt really choppy a few times.

I think the art direction for the cutscenes were definitely stop animation inspired. Looked like it was running at 10fps

That was a horrible trailer, but the game kinda looked interesting. A shame, it killed all interest for me. And also grew the ignore list.

I'm all for stylistic choices, but going from the stop motion stutter to smooth gameplay gave me whiplash.

What a godawful choice

They need to remove that or at least give the player an option to toggle it on and off.

Absolutely - whoever thought this was a good idea, they need to rethink it because it's atrocious.

You wouldn't buy it anyway, but nt.
Some people just don't like that style I'm one of them I may still get it but not everyone likes this style of animation.

South of Midnight is inspired, both in its visual and animation styles, by traditional stop-motion, so the keyed “steps” in our cut-scenes and some of Hazel’s in-game motions are intentional and not representative of either frame rate or the game’s actual responsiveness when playing. However we're also hearing that some of you find the transitions jarring, or don't like the style when playing, while others find it great. That's the kind of split feedback our team can take into consideration and discuss internally.

I personally love it. Dont compromise the artistic vision. You will never be able to please everyone.

I think a good middle ground would be making the stuttering, jittery stop motion effect something that the player can control with a menu setting. We can either leave it as-is or shut it off if you are like me and find it disorienting.

The world, character, and monster design all look great when in motion during normal gameplay. It just goes down the drain once it starts skipping and stuttering like that. It made me want to look away from your trailer. I can't imagine playing a game that becomes a chore to look at.

100% agreed.
For some players this stop motion effect may look good, others will rather perceive it as a technical issue, as stutter, as low framerate.
Having the option to turn it off would open it up to a much larger audience.

I remember there was a game last year doing a similar thing (don´t remember the name, it was on gamepass, exploration heavy) and I simply couldn´t play it, it felt broken despite running at 60fps.
I even got quite irritated on one of the older Assassins Creed games, which ran at 60 fps but the cloth simulation was at 30 fps.

I think low fps are looking bad.

I think best decision is make stop motion optional in game setting menu... Because game look very nice, but "low framerate" is kinda ugly and disturbing for a lot of people. :praisesun:
