Demons Roots

Masterpiece.
If we speak in terms of story - it's the canonical prequel(best played AFTER king exit though, but not too critical if you play both) to king exit and among best RPG maker story driven H games out there.

King Exit had terrible publisher and MTL but is still worth trying if you can still find it.(no longer available on steam)

This will certainly be by far best Kagura published game for a story driven game.(not like there is much competition, but still)

To those who played King Exit - prequel will be about the demon side and their motivations leading to the story that happens in King Exit.
In terms of game time - 100%(everything available, not just game complete) in King Exit took me ~31 hour, 100% on this one took ~40 hours if you need approximates.

The story is overall pretty grim, the H is on the mild darker side overall but has different scenes, I would say it's more H for the sake of story than simply out of place H scenes to make it an H game. If you are only looking for H - there are better titles out there as H itself is on the weaker side overall.
If someone has any more questions - feel free to ask, hoping the dev gets more acclaim he certainly deserves now that game is available internationally with good TL.

I enjoyed most of the game but my enjoyment plummeted after our first fight with the big bad (trying to keep spoilers vague). I thought what happened to the MC after that was nothing short of awful. I was truly aghast. I figured most content like this would be relegated to 'bad ends' that you don't necessarily have to see.

I don't want the MC that I've spent ten hours bonding with to be put through such an awful situation. Most of the sexual content I'd seen thus far was either played for laughs or it was clear the participants were more or less on board. Even the darker stuff that we did see was done to characters that we hadn't bonded with yet and it was done before we rescued them and made them part of the party. In other words, we rescued them from these terrible situations, we never abandoned a character to the situation.

I know that there was much darker content for the main characters but you don't run into that without looking for it or losing fights (I absolutely hated the Execution dungeon clips but I wasn't FORCED to watch them just to get through the game). Then after the first fight with the Big Bad, the script slams the darker content into your face without warning and it's directly targeting the MC. It's disheartening and it makes you feel like you failed. I might be OK with it if there was a way to win that fight and avoid that situation but it's a scripted forced-fail that makes me watch horrible things be done to the characters I've been spending time with and I resent that. Even once you recover and get the true ending, I still found it terribly dissatisfying. It really felt we hadn't accomplished anything in the game at all, that everything we had fought against wound up happening anyway, and that the game had wasted 12 hours of my life.

I think one of the big lessons I'll take away from this game is that darker sexual content needs to be directed against noncharacters. We don't want to watch the characters that we've come to care about, suffer. 90% of what I remember about this game is what happened to the MC after the first big bad fight. It's not even that what we saw was all that explicit but it was still just awful to see her treated that way (and not just sexually). It was actually a strangely realistic depiction of domestic abuse and it was something that was both triggering and something you don't want to think about happening to a character you've spent eight hours following through a story.

Honestly, the game needs an option to hug Polca at any time. As well as many scripted events where she gets hugs.

I wonder if any sequel could potentially lighten her burden or not...

I would lighten my load on her.

I completely agree. Honestly it wasn't even the darker sexual content, it was the forced loss my party of level 99 people that didn't even actually die to the move that loses you the battle, that already wiped the floor with ultra beast gon at half that level with worse gear. Like bro, just let me win if I win. It's fine if you wanna make that fight super hard, I'll go out there and grind up or strategize and pull out a victory, thats the point of making it a game where I can reload and try a scenario infinite times until I get a good result.

But then after, we have an almost good ending. We beat the bad guy in his many forms and return home victorious. The game could have just ended there. It would have been a solid ending if it had. However, they just had to completely ruin it and for the dumbest plot holiest reason. Do they not realize that a book of prophecy that keeps rapidly changing it's prophecy is useless? Like you literally averted the last prophecy that doomed demons. Then, with no interference from the book itself, the prophecy changed multiple times while you were fighting the final boss. Who the hell would trust that book to mean anything?

And then how the hell polca even get critically wounded from that fight? I finished it with full health. Polca has healing magic and healing demon skills. Hell even kalinka learned full heal, and yet we just forget that hear. And for some reason every time lily goes down she stays down when we need her up but when we fought her or the dolls the fully revive in like 2 seconds.

Like, this is something that should be the bad ending I got for not doing some important side quest and the true ending should actually be either well put together, or happy, preferably both, but at least one. There was legit no point. I didn't fight for the people to be born hundreds of years in the future, I fought for the world I actually explored and interacted with. It's xenoblade 3 all over again.

And if the preview for their next game is to be taken at face value (what appears to be Polca captured by some new villain), the sequel might even pull the rug under our feet and deny us even THAT future.
