A quick tip if you're looking to improve your speeds. Spoiler box for those who don't want any hint.
Unless this changed for the steam release, every 'variant' lets call them, always carries the same weapon. So the noble women will always have needles on their thighs, the nuns will always have a dagger in their bosom, etc. Makes it very easy to do a quick touch check for any weapons once you start recognizing them. You will also eventually be able to buy a metal detector from the merchant which will beep automatically whenever someone has a weapon on them if you want to make it super easy.
As for your actual question, I think it varies from area to area. The final level is a pretty short timer I believe, for instance, but it also kind of makes since considering what you're doing.
But yeah, weapon checks really slow you down for a while, but it stops being much of a concern once you get the scanner thingy. Still sucks if it isn't obvious like on their back, but it's much better than having to guess or check everyone.
