Clive Quest not triggering at Forest Village
I've played Suikoden 2 many times since childhood and even completed Clive's quest before, albeit at least a decade ago, so details are fuzzy. I was very happy to have the option to turn the timer off, which I have done. The event timer is paused at like 3 minutes. I know the quests in this game can be very fickle (looking at you, Susu spinach seed) so I've been trying my best to stay on top of things whenever I get an event flag.

I did the Clive event at Muse, met him in South Window, then took him to Lakewest. All of these events triggered as normal. Though I love to trade, and once appearing in Two River City, Chaco takes your full wallet so I took the opportunity to make it alll back. With Clive in my party, I went back and forth trading from South Window to Forest Village, didn't think anything about it.

After the Two River City event, I went back to the Castle to save and check out my upgraded castle. Cool, new castle level, it's time to go get some recruits. I take Clive with me and get Wakaba along with Tony and go out back behind the Trader's building and... nothing happened.

I also never received a message from Clive saying "Drat, it's too late." or "This is our chance!"
Nothing. No indication about the quest whatsoever.
I thought for sure, it must be because I was doing things to early, but the next plotline is with Greenhill and I'm hesitant to go any further in the story in case it closes any potential window for it to trigger. But... no matter how many times I go in and out of Forest Village, Clive doesn't react at all.

Any advice? Did I screw it by going into Forest Village too early in the game? I've never had this happen before but... who knows.

The Elza lookalike is there and you can't interact or she isn't even there? I went to forest Village ASAP in my file and I'm playing incredibly slow and my event triggered just fine.

No look alike is there. It's normal Forest Village. Looks like I'll just need to replay for Clive, again. Ugh, he's not even worth it lmao

The only thing I can think of that you didn't do would be go back to the Lakewest Inn guy and talk to him again.

I am an absolute dolt. You are correct, I didn't talk to the guy at the inn. Wow. I beat hard mode whack a mole AND caught a salmon in the mean time. You saved my play through much heartache. Thank you very much!
Whats this timer? Haven't played in 20+ years am also fuzzy.

In Suikoden 2, you can encounter Elza behind the rune shop in Muse. If you take her packages, she'll wait by the entrance for you and you get a little encounter with Clive. After this, you can meet up with Clive in South Window and recruit him as one of your 108 stars.

However, if you're absolutely mad, you can take Clive on a wild goose chase hunting down Elza, and this is often missed in first playthroughs because it keeps track of how long you've played the game and sets flags for each trigger. You must go here by hour 11 or no event. Must be here by hour 13, hour 14, hour 15, hour 20.

Since there are a lot of runes/ recipes/ gear you can only get by farming certain enemies that appear at certain points in the game, time is a precious commodity and you often have to sacrifice getting all items or even the basic story to see Clive's quest.

There are other timers in game like the Rare Finds refresh rate, some shops only being 10 minutes while others make you wait a half hour. Same with cooking competitions and Richmond investigations. Thankfully, in the remaster, you can set the Clive event timer off in the Settings menu. The shop refresh rates aren't affected by this. A Very nifty little feature that I was happy to have.

But y'know, it would also be very nifty it we could reload our saves without having to alt f4 every time to check the shop for those early game wing boots...

The Clive storyline has a time limit. So, if you spent a lot of time "trading" back and forth to make money you might have gone over the time limit. I'd save the "trading" until you have the blinking mirror and Viki.

Also, the event in Forest Village will not trigger until after the event in Greenhill so bring Clive when you have to go to Matilda Domain and make a quick stop at the Forest Village first.

You can turn off the timer in the Remaster. So far, it seems to only affect Clive's timer.

Can you get the achievement regardless if the timer is on or off?

You can, but you have to beat the timer if you leave it on. If you turn it off, you can get the achievement regardless. So if you're an achievement hunter, it's just easier to turn it off.

You could also just flip the achievement using SAM. Steam Achievements are a joke. That's why I play on PSN.
I used the CE speed hack to farm Fury runes from the Muse rune shop. The timer in the menu says 4:54 minutes, but my save says 100 hours (I've played about 4-5 in real time). So I'll report back if Clive is busted when I get to him.
