Success in Suikoden I Dice Game
I've been doing some cursory searches online but I haven't found any information on what, if anything, determines success in Gaspar's dice game.

Throughout the game I have had many rounds with him where he'll repeatedly throw storms of 1's, 1-2-3, or bust off the edge of the cup, which means I'm maxing out on Potch after about half a dozen rounds. However, after recruiting Pesmerga (close to the end of the game) I noticed that all of my rounds with him have been breaking the totally opposite way. Gaspar has now regularly been throwing storms of 6's, sometimes two or even three times in a row, and on the off chance that he throws a normal roll (which is usually a 6) I will immediately throw a storm of 1's or a 1-2-3 myself.

It's happened so consistently since recruiting Pesmerga that I decided to check his stats and found he has an ABYSMAL 32 luck at level 48. I removed him from the party and brought only the characters with the highest luck stat, assuming that I had discovered my problem, but my results haven't changed much. I'm beginning to think there's some bad RNG juju happening off of some weird variable that I've managed to set in a bad spot, but I have no idea if this is a known quantity already.

That dice game is the only real way to make money in this game, and since I've probably spent about 200,000,000 potch so far upgrading characters (it's satisfying for me to fully kit out every character) this turn has been pretty unfortunate for me. Anybody know anything or have any similar experiences to share?

There hasn't been any evidence to suggest the Luck stat affects successful rolls/make him eat ♥♥♥♥ either in the original or the remaster yet so I'd chalk it up to placebo myself. I've not paid attention to my party comp with him and even made him eat ♥♥♥♥ with Tir alone for a full 999,999. Just make at least 9,900 potch and savescum it tbh.
I'll keep this post in mind and let you know if i notice anything similar when I get there. Even if I do, though, it could end up just being confirmation bias.

Not sure if the Remasters have changed any mechanics, but this might interest you (from the originals).

Chinchironin
TLDR: Cursor position matters a lot, aim for the middle of the bowl.

A chinchironin roll is determined by 3 variables.

RNG
Cursor Position
"RNG Salt"

1st 2 are somewhat self-explanatory, the RNG Salt is a 2 byte value at 0x1B9B8C. On a new game it's set to 0, and whenever you save or load it gets set to IGT down to current frame count. It's why in the speedrun if we want to manipulate Chinchironin we can't save.

When determining a roll, the game goes through a sequence of checks as follows:

isTripleWin
isTripleLose
isDoubleWin
isDoubleLose
isPiss
standardRoll.

For all but standardRoll it uses the 3 variables listed above to determine each condition. Standard roll ignores cursor position. Cursor position plays a BIG role in these, to the point where good results are impossible with bad cursor position and vice versa. It goes through each check, and if it meets one that will be the result. The exception to this is if Tai Ho is the one rolling, he actually can't win/lose via non-standard role. So for him, if he meets one of these checks the process restarts again at isTripleWin. If none of the checks are met, you get a standard roll.

I noticed this too, but it's just RNG and confirmation bias.
