Remake or Original for First Play?
Always wanted to play these games: should I do the remake or the original version? What Quality of Life upgrades are there in terms of like encounter rate/time savings?

You can emulate the original for free. It's tougher to do the save transfer for Suikoden 2 if you do that.

The Remaster has a battle speed up that you have to turn on every battle.
You can sprint now from immediately after the beginning of the game.

That's about it for time savings.

Suikoden Fix allows remember the battle speed between battles. On emulator (DuckStation) you can also speed up the game.
As a lifelong Suiko fan, I recommend just playing the remake 100%.

The remake doesn’t change the story, it only made the games more beautiful, and conveniently efficient, which you don’t have to activate if you don’t want to.
Just play this one. Original translation has some bad parts and this is pretty clean. Rest of the game is almost identical.

With the sole exceptions of Tai Ho and Kanak in S1, who got royally screwed over in their facial "upgrades". They look outright poorly done/uglier, almost like their faces are a sketch rather than a finished product. They look WORSE than they were in the original.

Everyone else is pretty good! Sylvina doesn't look... bad... but I think they missed some of her cuteness when they redid her. Kimberly looks... I don't know why, but the new her gives me "trans" vibes for some odd reason, where her original just looked like a woman with sharp (but still beautiful) features, this new one seems like the artist didn't know how to make the features sharp while retaining the feminine aspect? So they came out with trans/masculine sharpness instead.

Still, overall? I'd say it's an EXCELLENT job, VERY well done. To have so few faces that have any issues? Amazing.

It's the same artist.

Really? That makes it even more strange. Oh well. It's still great overall. Four faces out of the (over) 108 (because even the bad guys look great) isn't a bad move. I just really wish Tai Ho looked better. He looks... terrible. To the point where I suspected that a secondary artist did him while the Primary worked on others. But if it's all done by the same original person from the original game? Idk what happened there. Kanak is at least a minor character you rarely see, Tai Ho you have forced time with and looks WILDLY out of place compared to the rest.

Only just starting S2, so we'll see how well that one stacks up.

it does not really matter aside from the remastered stuff and better translated text.
they made a lot of mistakes translation wise in the original versions.
the remastered is more faithfull translation wise.
otherwise its still the same owo.

I hear you, but it's not just the clarity or improvement (or lack-thereof) of the portraits for me but also the HD detailed landscapes and overall gameplay, which I care about a lot more.

All of the graphics are upgraded and look gorgeous. The water of the S1 hero's castle looks ALIVE. That alone is enough for me to recommend it over the original. The upgraded scenery is an experience that I think was missing for me when I played the game the first time fifteen years ago.

I also love the addition of faster movement and battle sequences. Battles get tedious after a while. Because of the speed feature I no longer feel annoyed from grinding.
I like the original still but the remasters are very loyal to the original so far. Havent started part 2 yet but it should be no different.

Don't bother with the originals, the remakes are just better versions of them
