Modding or character customization potential?
Now that we have a PC remaster, I'm wondering what the likelihood of mods, editors or anything in that nature would be.

While I love the Suikoden series, the issue is some characters are just way better or fun to use than others. There's plenty you might like the look or vibe of the character so you'd want to throw them on your party but they are just ultimately lack luster. I LOVED Eiyuden Chronicles and it definitely filled the Suikoden itch for me, even if wasn't the Suikoden experience some others wanted, it suffered from the same issue: Too many weak characters that it seemed hard to convince yourself they were worth using.

More than anything I think a balance mod for characters would be amazing. Although this would probably be ideal for 2nd and 3rd play throughs and so on as I'm sure out of nostalgia, myself and many others are going to want to use their favourites like Cleo, Flik and Viktor (which are some of the best characters anyway).

Beyond that I always thought enemies could have a bit more health, especially some bosses. This was probably my first proper introduction to JRPGs and if 9 year old me could beat it, older me would welcome a more challenging run at the game.

Other mods could bring in some liked features of the later Suikoden entries like skills and SP, some useable items, team attacks, more rune and equipment variety.

Once again these are ideas for enjoying the game in a more complete instead of or in addition to enjoying it the way many of us did before and nourish that sweet, sweet nostalgia.

I mean... it was advertised a lot, it was advertised shortly after Eiyuden was announced (strange coincidence...). The delays were publicized as well. Also there was the recent announcement of a Suikoden 2 anime and a Suikoden mobile gacha game.

I'm glad somebody's seeing it cause I sure amn't. I saw the announcement, but that was quite a while ago now, along with the delays, again, that was some time ago. But I meant marketing to actually buy it now that it's out. I haven't seen a single ad anywhere. I didn't see any reviews on IGN, Destructoid, or Polygon. Finally found an impression on Kotaku after some hunting at least, (I've been avoiding that place since the takeover, and even then I found it linked in a slideshow rather than main page), but that's it. I hadn't heard a single thing about an anime or mobile gacha game though, even after my hunt for reviews/ads, that's awesome! But, quietly putting out small drops of information here and there isn't exactly going to sell a game to anybody that doesn't already know what it is, and Suikoden isn't exactly a well-known franchise outside of die-hard RPG fans.

I personally wouldn't mind texture mods or even mods that update the pixel sprites as they look kind of bad against the HD backgrounds, but that's just me.

I played these games back when they first released, I'm an older guy now and would love minor things like maybe an XP or 100% drop rate mod so I don't spend hours upon hours grinding. Sure I'm enjoy the memories but I'm not enjoying the hours grind for some of the urns lol or leveling up.

Personally hoping the Lunar 1 and 2 remaster next month has better QOL updates than the Suikoden one. I'd have paid double the price just for Inventory QOL changes.

It doesn't help that the sprites look really rough without having some of the CRT screen there to blur them a bit. These are very rough to look at a lot of the time. I really don't understand why they did it like this with so many options avaiable to them to make it look more like the original. Especially since they delayed this game like 8 months or whatever it was.

Indeed. Plus with the old pixelated backgrounds the pixelatedness of the characters just kind of blended together a bit, while now the high-resolution backgrounds and the effectively rendered 640x480 characters contrast like a knife. Don't get me wrong, I still love it, I just could have loved it even more. Beautiful backgrounds though.

Mod page is up on Nexus mod and includes mods so far for smoother character sprites which I saw some people wanted something similar in this thread. There's also force PS button inputs and a nice overall QoL mod:

i would love to see a mod like the one in memoria for FF9 that removes the time limit for a certain quest in S2...And one that allows you to equip a character sphere/equipment directly on the menu of the items stocks / or the person you talk to change your party. It was such a drag to do it in S1 and while it's better in S2 it's still not optimized...

... turning off the event timer is a feature, my dawg...
Also why would the latter need to be "optimized" for runes? Only runesages can ♥♥♥♥ with runes.

Just play whoever you want to play. This game does not have that high of a difficulty ceiling. I have done plenty of solo runs (minus required characters at certain times) and even that is not much of a struggle.

You really should not have to worry about making an SS tier character based party to pull you through the game. Just use whoever you like the vibe of. if you have even the most basic understanding of the game's mechanics then you wont have any issues. Nobody should require a balancing mod to beef up characters they like just to complete the game.

A Randomizer mod would be kinda fun and/or funny for these games, or at the very least, Suikoden II.

Don't get too nostalgic. AFAIK they never could come to an agreement on using the WD script as it's apparently owned by Victor Ireland. The games may be different than what we remember.

Personally, I just like to see some form of character stat manipulation. And/or the ability to always choose your party. Being forcing to choose between 1 and four people every time gets obnoxious quick.

You don't get to choose your party members in this game?

Just curious, as I am debating whether or not to purchase.

You ALWAYS have to use the main character in your party but the other 5 slots are somewhat flexible. Early on in the game you don't have much characters recruited to even change up your party or access to a way to change your party but later you can change it a lot more. Some story missions though will force you to keep anywhere between 2-4 other characters in your party due to their involvement in that part of the story.

Mod wishes:
A mod to recruit Tessai much much earlier. It's completely stupid that he's one of the last characters you can get and he's a shop owner. By the time you get him you basically have all his hammers.
A mod to make no runes/equipment permanent
A mod to walk passed guards keeping you out of towns/paths bc this is an old game and it's fun to break.

I used to do the overlap save trick to transfer characters from a late game file to the early game and vice versa. Was very fun. Riou with no Bright Shield Run somehow clearing the Mt Raketeui mist, Captain Rowd getting defeated in one turn. Good times.
